Video games and movies/shows are entirely different beasts. I'm not sure we should open that one up as well!

Some new anime I am dling now that I have yet to see:

The Tatami Galaxy
Ponyo (yes I am downloading this after this discussion :p)
Darker than Black (started this a while back but never watched too far)
Ghost Hound
Cat Soup
Shiki
Genius Party
Kemonozume

just trying to make a comparison, i don't think that something is by necessity only for children just because it comes in a certain packaging or presentation. That a larger spectrum of people can appreciate does not mean that it's "for children" only. Besides, if you think that disneys publishing rights weigh in that heavily, this discussion is pretty much over because that's the most ridiculous thing i've heard.

I am using it as an example of Ghibli's target audience. It's not ridiculous really. Disney's target audience is very much the same, which is why they wanted to have rights to their movies here.
I'm also not saying it's JUST for children, it can be appreciated by all ages surely. I'm just not too crazy about it personally.

Disney is a huge conglomerate, they own everything from Miramax films to Marvel entertainment :P

This conversation makes me want Nausacaa and the valley of the wind original release here in the states back in the 80s( It was called Warriors of the wind). The localisation was way better and the voices had a LOT more emotion in them. It wasn't a direct translation and that made the dialogue a lot less awkward. The cool part is, apart from some name changes and pronunciation, it was still pretty much the same...

Tell me about it. The same is true of the comparably cringe-worthy Disney dub of My Neighbour Totoro here in Sweden (which admittedly is the only localisation I've seen in swedish since I watched it with a kid) Bizarrely, both Grave of The Fireflies and that were seemingly dubbed by a cable network here in the early 90s, and done so in a far more subtle manner than recent high profile efforts. I'm sure there are other examples of this, but those are the ones I've seen.

I hate when they do straight translations- they don't work, and seem very silly sometimes. ..

I think it's part of a larger scale problem of sweden - over the course of the last 10-15 internet years - having become less and less confident in its own language. I hear people use english expressions and phrases with swedish words shoehorned in all the time. The 20-somethings during the rising influence of the internet have grown up to become 30-something translators (and this concerns subtitle work on television aswell) that barely have a grasp on what real swedish sounds like anymore.

Contrast that to early 90s or mid 80s where the identity of our language was still absolutely given, and dialogue was confidently rewritten in a way that made sense and flowed naturally.

Granted, that isn't the case with english to native english speakers of course, but I have to imagine that this problem is likely widespread in european countries where english has become almost absurdly prominent -- for better and worse.

What I really wish they'd stop doing is the thing where they just say a word( or someone's name) all thoughtfully. I don't know if the Japanese actually talk that way, or if it's just something they do in film. Either wa, it annoys me, lol...

Ever wonder what Dumb and Dumber would be like if it were more like Inception:

I'm about to have recently watched The Amityville Horror remake.

There had better be more explosions and gratuitous sex scenes this time...

Barf. Watched it not too long ago and didn't like it. I've never been a fan of ghosts-turn-people-crazy movies though. Ghosts are cooler when they aren't just making someone do their bidding.

Watched Paranormal Activity yesterday. I enjoyed it enough, and I definitely felt uneasy while watching it. It definitely could have done without the very last couple of seconds though.

yep, the end is like the poop cherry on an anal cake.

Even the Blair Witch creators (as good as that movie was) knew they couldn't get away with that style again.

speaking of the Blair Witch, a third movie is coming out sometime in the future, mainly focusing on the Blair Witch's story.
I have no idea how they will go about it.

Never watched the sequel. Is it actually worth it? And what the fuck does this have to do with Inception?

Blair witch 2 is a bland piece of crap. I don't particularly like the first one but the second is just a really poor run-of-the-mill horror movie where the first at least did something to distinguish itself from the rabble of bad horror flicks. The regular recipe of teens/20-somethings out in the forrest, getting killed off one by one by some spooky ghost or some shit. Can't remember exactly as it was quite a while since i watched it, but i remember it as terribly bland, uninventive and just not particularly good in any sense. Then again i'm a bit of a horror/slasher buff, i love the old 80's and 90's horror and slasher movies, and i think the genre as a whole has basically gone down the shitter since somewhere around the mid 90's with a few exceptions along the way (like From Hell). So people less picky than me might actually like it, who knows, but i wouldn't bet on it :P

Yeah well i'm not suggesting that it's a swirling black vortex of misery that will consume your happiness and leave you an empty husk of a human, it was just a rather bland and forgettable experience and not terribly exciting or scary. If you are curious, check it out :)

In that case i suggest a double-viewing of A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell and Killer Condom. You will never see life in quite the same light after those movies and i will be seriously impressed if you manage to see them both in one sitting without killing ýourself ;)

just watched it; almost fell asleep.
Then they went and did that trendy head shakey shit on me. That is soooo corny.
In fact there were a few other stupid japanese remake cliches in there that just made me roll eyes.

POS slightly less marred by good acting.

I don't really give a shit about a person's preference in movies, but you were right this time.
