Truth is though there aren't too many games of this kind around, and even a downgraded NG is a fucking great action game. I've yet to buy it, but I think churning out weaker NG games from here on will still keep me reasonably happy.

Ninja Gaiden was an Ocarina of Time really and I'm not entirely convinced there'll ever be another NG game that quite comes together that well. That said, Devil May Cry 3 is a testament to the opposite sometimes being true. That is if you share my sentiment that it's the best in the series of course.

My playtime with the NG2 demo mostly has me somewhat worried about the obliteration technique and its impact on gameplay. The whole dismemberment/OT thing makes the game feel much more disjointed and it doesn't flow as well as the first one did.

Simom: my impression of NG2 so far goes something like this:

CLUSTERFUCK. Instead of the enemies circling you and attacking one at a time or at least with some sort of order, the enemies just run head first in to my blood thirsty arms and after a while i just don't know or care wtf i'm doing, cause all i need to do is equip the scythe and hammer on x and the limbs start flying. Also you get ninpo like every fucking kill and in chests and materializing out of the goddamn air, i bet Ryu craps ninpo power as well! I had to restrain myself from simply annihilating every group of enemies by tossing the goddamn sun at them (aka inferno).

So...no, so far NG2 takes Black and just lowers it a few pegs by making it into something that would be appealing to a 12 year old. But that's fucked anyway, cause all of them are just playing WoW anyways.

All in all i'm disappointed.

Also i never understood wtf made OOT so great. Sure it wasn't bad but it's FAR from 10/10. It's just Zelda, AGAIN. But in 3d.

Yes, it's a schizophrenic game. I mean on one hand they've tried to make it more accessible and omgwtf canned limb chop animation! On the other they still try to make it difficult on higher levels, but that just means they flood you with guys like you say.

But I think it's a bit thrown off by the fact that you get these insane weapons on a level that - presumably - you don't have them on in the full game. I still think it's fairly NG underneath and as long as you use the normal sword there's a reasonable amount of dodging and maneuvering required.

I'm still more worried by the fact that TOUCHING people makes their leg fall off and after that it becomes a Y button mash fest unless you wanna get wrestled to the floor and have a ninja blow up in your face.

About OOT I'm sure there's nothing I can write in a couple of paragraphs to explain it so I'll just leave it be. You don't like Braid either you UTTER FOOL. :D

Ninja Gaiden 2 is just too brutal for me.

I've never played a game where the moment I die I instantly go to turn it off because I can't muster the confidence to go back into what I was just put through.

Just vicious lol.

After all these years of me being a NG fanboy, I sold both NGS and NG2 yesterday, and I am happy to move on to other franchises and universes.

NG2 was good, but not memorible like NG was, and it was a glitchy, cheap game that didn't do any good.

But, those who like NG shoul try NG2 because of the new weapons, ninpo and OT and blood...but other than that...it sucks (except the music which has some great tracks, but not better than the first one).

Anyways, I am not gonna care about NG at all anymore...until NG3 comes out haha, which is years to come.

I am just gonna focus on another franchise to adore...so far, its Star Wars The Force Unleashed.

Who knows, maybe another game comes out that I even like more.

I'm on chapter 5 now, finally got the game the other day. And you know what? This game is CRAP. The whole thing that made NG black so good is totally screwed up here. In NG black i always felt that if i died it was my own fault, i didn't react fast enough or i didn't react in the right way, but in NG2? There's always at least three goddamn Ninjas/werewolfs/purple fuckers simultaneously chewing on my buttocks while the other 17 are flinging goddamn body parts/shurikens/fireballs at me! There's no chance to even fit a goddamn combo in there, as soon as i start swinging my sword at one of those fuckers i get a severed fore arm in the head and then, seeing as how i get stunned for a second, i get ass raped by that jolly bunch. Oh, and if i'm really lucky i might even get bombarded from afar with flaming arrows, that's a concept this hunk of shit seems to like.

God i'm pissed. Gaiden has gone from stern but awesome to cheap and annoying. What a waste of good time and money. Really.

As cheap as it is, and as poor as the story and story telling is, it still easily has the best combat of any game in the genre.

Actually...no. You can buy NG Black on xbla, and that's a hell of a lot better.

Also i just remembered another stupid thing about it, the randomness of chopping off limbs. Sometimes you never manage to do it and some times you chop em off at the first hit, and this shit really has a major impact on each encounter.

Actually no... NG2's combat is faster and more fluid, and the dismemberment and finishers look awesome.

I like the randomness of chopping off limbs. It'd be too predictable and boring if you always knew that attack X would chop off limb Y.

Woah woah woah woah woooaaah. Now I gotta step in. I agree that NG2 isn't as terrible as people make it out to be, and even though there's unfairness to it it's still a plenty good action game. There is no frigging way it tops the original Ninja Gaiden though.

It's predictable and boring when things aren't random? Well let's just have all the buttons do completely random things then! The way the game is set up, dismemberment is KEY, and to have it be essentially luck driven is just completely retarded. The fact that once people's limbs drop off it's just a Y button mash fest is probably both some misguided attempt at making the thing look more "cinematic" or whatever, and the very reason they had to make it random to not break the entire game. If anything, the finishers just chop the game up into bits of prebaked animation, completely ruining the natural flow of its predecessor. "Fluid" is the last word I'd use to describe NG2, especially compared to the original game.

As long as things "looking awesome" is what you prefer I guess NG2 has more canned animation in there, but there is no way it plays as good as NG(B) did.

There is moves that always chops limbs off. On some moves it might be random but if you want you can do it when you want (meaning of course those normal enemies not some enemies that take million hits to kill).

Yeah...I simply want things JUST to look awesome and nothing more.../sarcasm. However, if I find that it plays better and is faster and, yes, more fluid, then "looking awesome" is just another plus. You'd have to be a bit of a pretentious twat to not want things to look awesome.
but there is no way it plays as good as NG(B) did.
Nope. It definitely, 100%, without-a-doubt plays better than NGB.

As for it being random, it's not like it's on the verge of being game breaking in any way. Sometimes a hit will chop a limb off, and sometimes it takes two hits. It's still somewhat predictable, but a bit of variety in each encounter doesn't hurt.
The finishers are fast and generally just feel like regular moves that take an extra half a second. As such, they don't ruin the flow of the combat.

Ronsauce: Just go play God of War, that's obviously what you want, based on that stupid statement.

NG is not about fast, cool and stylish action, it's about solid gameplay. NG2 lacks a lot of that compared to NGB. NGB was hard but FAIR, NG2 just keeps on badgering you with bullshit and then solves it by giving you shitloads of ninpo and goddamn instant kill attacks that makes the gameplay feel all stuttering and fumbling. NOT cool.

And how is randomness a good thing!? It's like if you popped in Virtuafighter and some moved had a 30% possibility of instantly killing your opponent. It makes NO sense!

No my thesis on Itagaki stands firm: the guy is a retard and NGB is his one genius moment.

And, Ron, about NG2 being a better game than NGB...seriously, that's a laugh. Did you even play NGB?

It's saved by the fact that it IS random. The randomness isn't what threatened to ruin the game in my opinion, the OT's are. It's still the main thing that fucks it up for me to be honest. Obliteration techniques takes the entire FOUNDATION of the first game, of always having to adapt and react in different ways, and asks you to hammer one button. Let's paint a scenario.

How many times have you rushed into a group of enemies, hacked away, then hammered the Y button *just in case* someone's about to go suicidal on you? See, when you start pressing the Y button the game isn't NG anymore for a while. It isn't NG all the while you're skidding across the screen playing canned animations. When the game simply asks of you to set aside everything you've learned just to press a single button, it creates a vacuum.

If this had been further emphasised by giving you complete control over the dismemberment at all times, the entire game would fucking.. CRASH. It's like Megido says, what if you've got a fighting game where a two step technique always defeats the opponent? What's all that other stuff even for!?

OTs strike me as an attempt to appeal to the GOW crowd to be honest. "KRATOS IS RIPPING WINGS OFF.. YOU KNOW THINGS!!" and now Ryu's gotta have some canned animations too. Only, in GOW the combat is already incredibly one-note (the appeal of that game really lies elsewhere) so it doesn't fuck up those games at all.

It's ironic because one thing that'd make me even more annoyed would be if the dismemberment had no impact on gameplay whatsoever. An no I don't mean "OH MAN SO UNREALISTIC NO ARMS LIKE AND HE'S OKAY!", I mean it would've been an almost warrior withinly sudden gore-up for no reason at all. However, putting the countermeasure on a single button was a damn copout.

Instead they have to ramp up difficulty by dumping so much crap on you at once it's like listening to five different songs of different genres simultaniously. Somewhere in the middle of all this you can barely see when people's legs have dropped off, so it's reduced to a bafflingly jerky and random feeling game. QUITE unlike NGB.
The finishers are fast and generally just feel like regular moves that take an extra half a second. As such, they don't ruin the flow of the combat.
The animation is only part of the problem though. It's what it suddenly does to the combat input wise that's the real issue. "Flow" to me isn't just about the ninjas not pausing in their hopping around, it's about what I'm doing on the controller. During the mandatory "check for leglessness" Y button mashing phase, it's stupider than the most basic brawler.

And really, no matter how much one could campaign for the inclusion, simply leaving it out would instantly cause a chain reaction in the design of the game that'd adress all the issues people are having with it, and make for a better game.

It's nowhere near DMC2 levels of a cockup, but in some ways it's just as bewildering.

I don't see the OT being that bad. I mean NGB had UT and that needed just to press a bit Y too and then watch couple dudes to die (with animation like OT) :P

Actually, I've said before that I've always thought NG had the best combat of any of the games in the genre. How they implemented the OTs in NG2 really didn't hurt the game at all for me and don't feel like the similar instances in GoW. But I mean, you can continue being an ass if you'd like.
NG is not about fast, cool and stylish action, it's about solid gameplay.
O Rly? I'd say it's about both.
NGB was hard but FAIR, NG2 just keeps on badgering you with bullshit and then solves it by giving you shitloads of ninpo and goddamn instant kill attacks that makes the gameplay feel all stuttering and fumbling. NOT cool.
I'm talking purely about the combat, NOT the cheapness of the game which I already fucking said I disliked.
And how is randomness a good thing!? It's like if you popped in Virtuafighter and some moved had a 30% possibility of instantly killing your opponent. It makes NO sense!
That seems ridiculous. I'd liken it more to shotting a bad guy in an FPS and either having him die right away or just getting injured. It's not that big of a deal.
No my thesis on Itagaki stands firm: the guy is a retard and NGB is his one genius moment.
I don't disagree with you about Itagaki.

Yeah except in an FPS you AIM. Aiming is essentially the core gameplay. There's no way to aim your swing towards an arm, leg or head in gaiden, hence it's just stupid and random. But like Simon said, the randomness is also it's saving grace since being able to do it at will would break the game even worse than it already is.

Also i can't understand how you agree that the game is cheap but the combat is better, for me that simply does not compute since 100% of the fun in Gaiden is the combat and that gets wrecked by the fact that the games is so cheap.
