Wonder if MS will have partnered with sky if this is all true? So the 720 is a HD sky set top box? Seems like a natural progression to the kinda lacklustre sky incorporation in the 360. If that's their big draw though, a digital TV PVR system, like playTV on PS3. Then it isn't something i'm interested in really. If sky is somehow made free though simply by using a 720, then that would be pretty big news. If it's XBL gold sub on top of sky subscription...then meh.

Pricing and the "Gotta have experience right out of the box" will be major factors.

Example 1. Wii -- $249 price point was well below the Xbox 360 Pro ($399; $299 neutered Arcade) and PS3 ($499 / $599). The out of the box experience had the attention of the casual audience in the form of Wii Sports / Waggle. Parents loved the fact the popular video game past time could become an active, family affair.

Example 2. PS2 -- $299 price point was reasonable for a "super computer in a box" as it was trumpeted by the press. The out of the box experience was DVD which the Dreamcast lacked, the GCN did not support, and the Xbox charged for. The PS2 had historic launch sales and quickly netted broad industry support and had the best software library of any generation.

If Sony showed all their cards, as much as I like the PS4 hardware, the Durango console with Skype, TV Tuner, and full Motion/Voice Kinect 2.0 integration offers an out of box experience that may cater to the "iPhone Generation." From a HW perspective if MS has matched Sony's CPU performance and memory MS has made it simply an issue of same game, different visuals. If visuals were cut due to price concerns and/or other features (i.e. Waggle 2.0 and media convergence) MS obviously believes the "gaming market" in general is their target more so than core gamers only caring about core gaming.

THAT would be an interesting debate and to see how it plays out in the open market.
As long as i can still play my core games, then either way i'm good.

Yeah that's not going to happen. If anything the Xbox would be free with your Sky Subscription, not the other way around.

You will always be able to play your core games regardless of what Microsoft or any other party does. There are other platforms.

Acert.. I think "Waggle 2.0 and media convergence box" is an awesome product name.

That would be pretty decent too tbh, But as with most of those sort of promotional offers, it'll be new customers only no doubt.

People pay that man... I wouldn't pay YOU anything and I think you manufacture more merit.

I'm sorry for saying that, and I'm sorry that Boston lost.

Not sorry
You just HAD to rub in my team losing today, eh? :P Go ahead, enjoy it. Here's an interesting statistic. The team with the longest regular season win streak has not won the championship in like the last 4-5 NBA seasons. Considering the accuracy of that piece of spin, the Miami Heat only continue to shoot themselves in the foot by carrying on with this 18 game winning streak of theirs. So, in a stroke of genius, my team is only preserving their championship viability by making sure their win streaks are occasionally snapped once in a while. Meanwhile yours, in all its misguided consistency, are barreling towards certain doom.

Is he buying this spin? Shit, I sure fucking hope so. Well, at least Tiger won today!

Microsoft may be wrong :D
Wouldn't be the first time the forums were wrong about something like this. Forums were wrong about the Wii and Nintendo's chances prior to its release, they were wrong about what would happen between PS3 and 360. They were wrong about PSP destroying DS when it came out (A lot of people would love to take back those predictions from when the DS initially started out slow and didn't have enough unique content to exploit the two screens). It was thought Nintendo's handheld dominance was surely at an end when the PSP was headed to release.

They were wrong about Vita slaughtering the 3DS based on Vita's impressive specs. They were wrong about Kinect when they felt it wouldn't go anywhere and wouldn't have a meaningful impact on 360 console sales, yet the reality was quite the opposite. They were also wrong in thinking that PS Move would be more successful than Kinect.

Gaming forums are very vocal and pay attention more than the average gamer, but they (we) have a very bad track record of predicting what most gamers will do or find worthwhile.

I think you have it wrong. Most of those people aren't trying to predict the success or lack thereof of the next Xbox. They're simply not finding anything of value in any of the rumors. I don't think I've seen many people claiming that Microsoft is going to fail. They're just saying that they don't have faith in Microsoft's commitment to what they care about. That's a different thing all together.

I think it's easily possible for Microsoft to come out with a dreadful and successful product. Or to fail with a great product. It's important to separate those discussions. Sure some people think Kinect will be a dreadful failure, but that's not something you need to believe to be a critic of Microsoft's Kinect-centric focus.

True, but most people on forums are hardcore gamers and as such have very particular views (allot being fanboys) also the sad truth is that hardcore gamers (consoles anyway) make up a not so big percentage of console/handheld users, so if these companies don't also pander to the casuals they will not get the massive sales they desire.

Tom Warren (The Verge) seems to believe we're going to hear something in a few days. Whether that's official or not I don't know, but Warren making mention of it means something is about to get revealed.

https://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/3108917986188...

It doesn't make sense that Microsoft is trying SO HARD just to maintain the black hole of secrecy around Durango. Many are starting to get the very real impression that the final specs will reveal much more that what's been leaked. And I'm leaning toward one of these configurations- Dual APU or APU + GPU.

how you reckon it'll be priced? competative with MS taking a big hit? or pricey? i'm leaning towards the later, i don't see how they can't. if it's spec'd higher then what's rumoured, has a packed in kinect 2.0 AND has TV capabilities, surely it's going to be expensive?

surely kinect will be boosting the price assuming it is the needless pack-in that it's rumoured to be? i can only assume kinect 2.0 will be more advanced, and if kinect 1.0 was $150, they could potentially be packing in a $200 camera. MS have the cash to take a big hit per console sold though i guess?

If there is indeed more than what we've already seen..........think $399.99 with Microsoft taking a hit of 100 dollars or more. Microsoft took a $125 hit per console when the 360 launched.

Indeed, and then followed by RRODs.

But they managed to recover very well from that, the 360 (Kinect hardware and software sales added) earned them $54 Billion this generation. Xbox Live earns about $230 Million per month just on subscriptions alone, it's probably more when you factor in marketplace purchases.

So Microsoft can afford to take the hit, the division has other sources of income to sustain them through launch.

Sounds plausible.. Apple also does it with their products..

They probably won't use Xbox 3 because that might give some people the idea the Playstation 4 is newer (and better).. Sounds dumb, but that's really how it works (lots of ignorant people on this planet)..

Last year Microsoft registered domains that include Xbox8.us, Xbox8.org. In addition they registered XboxLiveTV.com, XboxTablet.com (don't be surprised when you see it Optimus) and XboxPhone.com, and XboxCompanion.com.

Most have concluded that the Xbox 8 is actually just the symbol for infinity.

@Optimus. And it is my prediction that that tablet controller will go mobile.

Hopefully the name doesn't suck. I think whatever they do, they'll want it to be the final blueprint on how they name future Xbox games consoles from here on out. Everything will follow as part of a clearly defined pattern from here on out.

They may just adopt the Apple route where the name generally doesn't ever change all that much, if at all, and they'll simply differentiate based on the hardware inside each new iteration being different. They may indeed just adopt their operating system naming scheme. Whatever they call the quick followup to Windows 8, might just be precisely what they call the next xbox.
