Someone has corrupted our dear friend ManThatYouFear. Such blasphemy, and on a Sunday no less! :P

I can dream though, can't I? Unless Microsoft just literally plans on doing absolutely nothing at all in Japan, Blue Dragon seems like a pretty good and safe place to start. If I don't see an announcement of some kind within then the first year of the new xbox being out, then and only then will I have officially given up on the possibility, until I see the smallest piece of potential evidence that I can latch onto and never let go of.

Haha, Marumaro was so awesome. His presence made me enjoy it even more. He's an example, as is most of the game, that games like this need not be all hyper serious or mature, that there's room for lighthearted or even cute moments. I still remember how awesome that celebration was inside Marumaro's village after we helped them all out.

Optimus im just catching up to this thread, but if you think a "Blue Dragon" sequel reveal would be something Microsoft would show off at their announcement of the new console... you are fucking batshit insane. Nobody bought that game, or probably remembers its a thing.

Hey, they announced the Xbox 360 with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, so I don't see why they couldn't announce a possible BD sequel with the new Xbox.

To be honest, It sold pretty damn well for an exclusive jrpg on the xbox 360 that released as early as it did on the console. Beyond that, the game was just damn good and a quality jrpg experience that is easily among this generation's best. Square, with the exception of incredible DS releases such as The World Ends With You and Bravely Default, which is looking pretty damn incredible, were soundly outdone this gen by Sakaguchi and Mistwalker, as far as big console releases are concerned. Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and The Last Story on the Wii are all much better jrpgs than anything Square Enix has managed on home consoles this gen, and I think that means something.

And you're not interested, I get that, but quite a few others are. You look at any random GAF thread talking about the best jrpgs from this gen or which jrpgs people should play from this gen and Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story on the Wii, get mentioned quite often. I toss in The Last Story because this isn't so much about Microsoft and Xbox as I feel that Sakaguchi and Mistwalker did incredible work this gen and should keep making games. If not Microsoft, I sure as hell hope Sony or Nintendo get them to develop games for their systems, because they know their shit. I just look at Microsoft as owning what I see as two very valuable IPs to two of my favorite jrpgs this gen, from my favorite game developer of all time, and just hope they plan on doing something with at least one of them.

I focus on Blue Dragon, particularly because I think it's the one most likely to get the sequel nod, as much as I think Lost Odyssey was just utterly fantastic as well. The fact is they were both great jrpgs in my eyes, and I want more. I focus especially on Blue Dragon, because it's the only one of the two Microsoft has suggested they want to and plan to make a sequel for. That's not just me dreaming, they actually said that. A big part of me hopes they just felt it was wiser to hold onto it for their next gen machine, since they technically didn't need it on the 360, and, quite frankly, I would've held onto to it, too. Microsoft will bellyflop in japan again, we all know this, but they have to do SOMETHING there. They can't afford not to. Failure to take Japanese content as seriously as they did with the 360 will hurt their next console worldwide. I have zero doubt about this.

The 360 did better than the original because it managed to all kinds of gamers aboard that once would never give a Microsoft machine the time of day. I was one such gamer and Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey changed that for me. I "jumped in" for those two jrpgs and thanks to those games, it opened me up to explorer other things that the xbox brand has to offer, such as Forza, PGR, Halo etc. I now love Forza and Halo when I wasn't a fan of either before owning a 360. Shit, the sequel potential for Blue Dragon is so friggin high that it pains me to no end to even think that Microsoft could be so shortsighted as to not see that. The way that game ended opens up a lot of interesting potential for future games in the series. They have a foundation that if they don't abandon it, could make Blue Dragon 2 far better than the first ever was and would cement it as a pretty big franchise, far bigger than I think some expect. The potential is there, they need only reach for the damn thing. Beyond just any sequel, it just makes a lot of sense to continue working with Mistwalker, and a good place to start is building on a previous IP.

I agree that it was a different time, but the attack plan has to be the same. It's the best chance that Microsoft has. If Microsoft, just because they aren't selling in Japan, chooses to ignore the importance of serious Japanese content of their own, the next xbox won't achieve anywhere close to the level of success that the 360 now enjoys. I guarantee it. This might sound strange to some, but you have no idea how many people, when I was standing on line in December 2005 to get a 360, cited Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey as their primary reason for picking up the 360. I didn't know any of these people. They were similar to me in that almost none of them owned the original Xbox, and they were major fans of Japanese rpgs. I don't know why I was surprised that so many were talking about Sakaguchi's announced 360 titles, but I was because I had honestly never met that many people in my personal life that were as interested in jrpgs as I was. Outside of my core group of friends from school, there was nobody else. And here was a jam packed line, stretching around the corner for like 2 or 3 blocks and, I kid you not, it was all people could talk about on that damn line. These were mostly Playstation 2 owners going out to purchase their very first Xbox for a reason you normally would never see someone standing on line to buy anything Xbox, for 2 Japanese role playing games from the creator of final fantasy. People were on line saying exactly what I was saying, that they only planned on buying a PS3 till they found out about these games.

It might seem silly to idolize a game developer so much, but I really enjoy Sakaguchi's work. People were talking about it all night. It wasn't until like 3 in the morning that you heard what I expected to hear most of the night, "Shit, I just want that new madden with better graphics. Only reason I'm here."

It was my first time ever staying on a line overnight out for a videogame system, and I didn't do it because I was somehow interested in better graphics or was in anyway amazed by anything Microsoft had to offer outside of those Mistwalker jrpgs. People might think that this kind of thing doesn't add up, because you can't quantify Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey as system sellers, but for some people it was, and there is a cumulative effect that starts to build when people see that a console has something for everybody, even if all of that isn't something that you would necessarily buy yourself. The Xbox 360, thanks in large part to Sakaguchi's games, created a market for jrpgs that was once almost non-existent on Xbox that even Square couldn't ignore. I think Final Fantasy on 360 is far less likely without those Sakaguchi jrpgs basically eating into a market that Square knew they wanted to sell to.

People are more willing to take a chance with a system they feel is built on variety, and it's important that people see the platform holder taking steps to contribute to that variety. If Microsoft bails on that, they may as well not even think about competing with the PS4. That's the secret to the success of the PS1 and PS2. It's an overlooked part of the Xbox 360's overall strategy. It wasn't just due to the headstart. You got a lot of new people onboard, people that normally never looked to Xbox before, looking to buy games to hold them over till the games they really wanted showed up. More beneficial to Microsoft, they started to get exposed to other Xbox only franchises. I sure as hell wasn't standing on line for Halo. I wasn't even a fan of the franchise then.

You're probably right. I just rechecked when they made the announcement, and they announced it well before E3. Lost Odyssey was shown at E3 2005, and then Blue Dragon at TGS that same year. So, I guess if I don't see it anytime before now and the release of the next xbox, it probably isn't happening. But Microsoft have publically talked about a sequel being something they want to make. And Sakaguchi has said very strongly that he wants to turn it into a franchise and that he would keep talking about it with Microsoft, and that Blue Dragon 2 would be some kind of online game.
