Activision and Sony must be kicking themselves, such a waste.
Jury is out on whether I'll still be playing when the first of the expansion pass DLC drops. The expansion pass would need to have as much content as the full game to be worth it, and they already stated we won't be getting new worlds in this one.
It plays like the best console fps of all time, which really makes this a difficult game to evaluate. I think 2014 should be known for more than just remasters. It also has some fun games packed with too little content/variety. Titanfall, Infamous, and now Destiny off the top of my head.

This game also has the worst RPG economy I've ever seen. It's a great shooter trapped in a pay to win model that they're too nervous to ask for money for. The fact that the vendors cap out is the real problem. Glimmer is useless now and the Marks are limited to 100 per week.
The chests don't drop anything good, the bosses don't drop anything good, and the Raid apparently doesn't give out class specific items either. It is completely random. Almost as if it's just certain players' Destiny!

As far as my opinion on the game a week in... Still really enjoyable game to play. Probably the best multiplayer game I've played since Borderlands 2. I can see myself coming back to it as my defacto console shooter.

Every upgrade item (Ascendant Shards, Strange Coins, etc) should be available to be earned/bought as well. That's another huge annoyance. Where most RPGs have you crafting up better items by tearing the others down or merging other elements, this game just requires random chance for everything. It boggles the mind.
I'm sure idling will get patched, but they need to address so many other concerns while their at it. And they still haven't released official patch notes on what they changed in 1.03.

I'm curious to know where the $500 million budget went, because it didn't go into the game.
I think i completed this yesterday...i say i think becasue i honestly don't know :/
The environment gave me the same feeling as the wax museum i recently visited "yes it looks pretty, but its dead"
Would it have been so hard, to have terminals you can activate, read emails from those peoples last moments, find books, or anything that you can pick up read, and put back down, i get it, dont want to horde your inventory so fine, you can at least pick it up...
If you're going open world, then bloody keep it open, forget the missions, just drop us there and good luck, at least dont make me go back and forth and all the sudden something activated because now Im doing Y mission, which is the SAME as all the other missions, kill x of Y or collect zof W AFTER killing x of Y...
My most fun in this game is just riding fast as you can on the hoover bikes and making jumps, which now Forza Horizon 2 does way way better with more music options.
Saving grace is the shooting, the core mechanic is amazing, guns feel great, jumping and melee feels great. And the one mission you get to have a sword was AWESOME, why cant we bloody have melee weapons? Cos god forbid this keeps things fun rather than a chore.
Im level 20, played a few more bountys, FINALLY got 1 level vanguard, havent found any useful items, the gun the stranger gives is the only good thing i ever got, and thats just 206...
When all think alike, no one is thinking very much.
I really care for the Queen though, but all characters are written so poorly, I can't even recall her properly.
Gameplay Mechanics are awesome, love the system but after level 20 I ha d to force myself to play on ... let's wait and see how the continous support turns out - still seems to be quite ambitious.
Turned my Warlock to the fire-sun-side, but I hate it's special now ... a lot of grinding awaits ;)
the only tyrant I accept is my inner voice [and my two kids ;)]
Getting' all digital, baby - on console!
Some caveats, I am more tolerant of faults than most. I am predisposed to play any Bungie game. Been playing mostly solo on 360 and only just hit level 20 although not finished the story yet, I've got a good half dozen story missions left at least. I played WoW to like level 10 and no further so MMO mechanics don't feel overly tired to me.
Defining the game has been hard for many but I'm fairly clear in my head that it is definitely an acquired taste. I tend to think of it in terms of blended Scottish whisky where by it's obvious influences are the single malts, Halo, CoD, Borderlands & WoW. If you can appreciate all of those in their own ways, then there is a chance you might like the combination thereof that is Destiny assuming the bits they left out or compromised upon were't critical to your enjoyment. If on the other hand you like one or more of the above to the exclusion of one or more of the others, say love Halo but hate ADS. Love CoD precisely because it isn't bullet spongey, Destiny likely isn't for you. The people who do love it will probably play it for ages. If this is truly the game Bungie wanted to make then I have to doff my cap to them in a way because the way I see it, they've spent a huge amount of money making a game for demonstrably narrower audience than any one of those previous. You can argue with a lot of the decisions they've made but some of them are clearly deliberate rather than oversights.
What is clearly a deliberate decision is relegating the narrative to the background somewhat. What is a daft decision is not being able to dig into the lore in game. The game is full of these contradictions.
I find Pants comments intriguing because one of those other deliberate decisions was to place the emphasis on the game post the soft level cap. Levels 1-20 feel a bit of a footnote in the grand scheme of things. Whether I'm still playing after bashing away at that for a couple more weeks is probably the million dollar question but it's clearly their intention to get everyone on the hunt for light sooner rather than later so I can understand why progress after this point is supposed to be hard going. Which is not to say it should be as frustrating as he recants. The only legendary item I've got at the minute is from my faction but I'm still on the story which I've long since outgrown level wise and just getting a load of moody gear. I need a bigger vault for an alt.

I've collected 35 Legendary Engrams and gotten 1 piece of usable gear from them, that's appalling. These are the rarest of rare drops, and they give you useless gear 34/35 times. To put it in perspective I have more of the rarer Exotic weapons (3) than I do Legendary (2 as of last night). It's pretty ridiculous and I don't understand the thinking behind it. If it weren't for playing Control/Skirmish with friends I'd definitely have given this up. I don't know if I'll be playing by the time they finally add Iron Banner to Crucible, and I've been looking forward to that since the beta ended.
It seems to take an inordinate amount of time to level up the Vanguard rep as well. One thing that totally isn't obvious is that if you sign on with a faction, you no longer accrue normal Vanguard rep so all the bounties I've been turning in have been going to FWC. Even then, it takes a long time to get to Vanguard Rank 2 (is there any point to Rank 1 at all?). I guess Bungie were intending to buy armor first as it has light but it should be a bit more obvious that saving the marks for rank 3 and a weapon is likely to be sub optimal.
The story missions have been better after Venus though.
