Loakum Ugh….scratch that previous comment. The upcoming Game of Thrones video game is a F’in mobile phone game. Why can’t they came an open world GoT game, like Witcher 3 or God of War? (> 3 Months ago)

That said I'm always watching this thread to see what's going on so by all means keep on posting. I'm liking what I see from Hotel Dusk on DS and I keep meaning to pick up Elite Beat Agents but I'm spending my commute catching up with work stuff mainly at the moment :(
So many games so little time!
Trauma Center would've been a must have (for many anyway) but that's for some reason placed in JULY after having been an US launch title.
Similarly Elebits/Eledees was also chucked waaay back from its original launch window release. They did the same thing with Excitetruck, but not with Sonic and a few others, and this practice of holding launch games and bringing SOME games out when they were released in the US has created a big fat dry spot in the middle. One we're in right now.
Pacing is great and everything, but not when a lot of the stuff coming out once a week is a bit rubbish, XBLA style.

I will probably pick one up with the release of Mario Galaxy like i have always said, but there is nothing on the platform at the moment that is making me want one.

At home though, I'm just drawn to a select few 360 games at present. I don't anticipate that changing once the beta is out. I think that is more to do with my tastes though, rather than a generic problem with the Wii, when you bear in mind the audience it's trying to attract.
Your "traditional" games, if you will, will be there when the software rolls in. I've had my fill and for a little while it can sit there sweetly and take a back seat. The people it's selling gangbusters to right now probably don't see the lack of software as a problem, hence it's success. When sales start to slow down, I imagine Nintendo will be rolling out the software to bring them back up again.
They're certainly stockpiling in Japan for the holidays/Paper Mario.
It's interesting actually, a colleague of mine is an ex game tester and has several friends still doing that. Perhaps he's jaded but he's convinced the Wii is nothing more than a fad and that next year with a price cut the PS3 will blow it out the water.
My own take on it is that I've heard the variations of the same stuff in the game press all last year, by the end of this year, the Wii could have a 2-3m unit lead on the PS3 in Japan and it's making tracks in the US/EU at a fast rate. Plus the DS says hi! In short, codswallop! I'm inclined to think I should pin him down to a friendly wager, is my money safe?
There's also the fact that the Wii almost without exception leaves a fantastic first impression with anyone who purchases it. If you're at a friend's house, unconvinced of its appeal or you're standing in a store waving the wiimote about it doens't quite have that same impact. If you do buy it and play it properly an evening it's bound to give you a RUSH with its promises of greatness. Therefore, a new Wii owner is prolly one of the most annoyingly excited people you can encounter.
After a while, people seem to either expect more from games *RIGHT THEN*, in which case they suffer an enormous backlash of boredom and regret their purchase, or they apply the same *faith* I have in that it will eventually deliver.
I think if you're at any point positive towards what the Wii can do, those are your two most likely "paths" to travel down once you own the system yourself.
I've been blessed in a way. I don't really have genres I can't possibly enjoy. I'm not a sports freak yet I can enjoy footie games and hockey games.. I'm not really into cars, yet stuff like PGR3 and even something as complex as Forza actually appeals to me. When it comes to games I'm open to pretty much anything. That also means that whatever comes out at this point for the Wii - any genre - if it's fun I'm going to enjoy it.
Meanwhile a lot of people feel that they want shooter stuff, swordplay stuff, action games et cetera and they're not really out yet. There's potential for them, you can even imagine how some things will work when those games do come out, but right now the Wii isn't quite there yet. Therefore they buy practially NO games, and with no games any console will bore you.
The Wii controls are tons of fun (as established) but they won't make up for no games.
With its popularity the games will come though, so like you say Deft, it's not an inherent flaw with the Wii itself.
Wii being a fad. I dunno. So what if it is? Playstation had CD based 3D games and people went JESUS CHRIST! when they saw Toshinden and ran out and got one. Not every game was insanely pretty, nor had snazzy CG intros, nor were they all that good, so there was a period of tansistion there too. As people did run out to get it, devs took notice of the platform as install base = money, and soon enough the amazing games came out with killer apps like FF7 and MGS.
So with the Wii I dunno. Motion controls, the sheer fun of it has people running out and buying one. When the install base is big enough the killer apps will come and it's a successful platform. It doesn't really matter (to anyone) WHY a console sells as long as it attracts devs.
I also think people are prone to hating the Wii because they're a bit scared it might be successful. I don't think people would be that passionate in expressing their disdain for it if it didn't threaten to change the industry into a fun driven, technology ignoring playground. I mean it really doesn't, but I think a lot of people believe that.
I think a lot of people think that in liking the Wii they need to take a stance and make a statement that they want to slow down the tech advancements in regards to graphics, and ditch the standard formats of games where you play using buttons and analogue sticks. Sort of like gay haters thinking accepting homosexuals equals "I like men".
This seems to lead to a generally conservative stance with comments like "I wish the Wii was more powerful!" (missing half the point) or "Microsoft could make a device like that for the 360" suggesting that the controls were optional.
Well, the Wii is an alternative. It's never going to stop the advancements made by huge companies towards hollywood collaborations and cross marketing, and in the PC space, not making games like Crysis would cripple companies like nVidia and ATi, even Microsoft themselves!
I think that's something people need to stop worrying about, and stop trying to tailor the Wii to what they want as a SINGLE STANDARD in the future. The Wii is all about breaking away from the standard, for those that got bored of it or those that want something different in addition to it.
So yeah, I think the "fad" comments and the hate are a reaction to a lot of things, based on a number of different assumptions. The numbers themselves are consistently AWESOME five months in, and none of the big guns are even out yet.
I'd prolly feel confident in betting against your friend, personally. :)

But I also think that Nintendo can afford to ride the Wii for a while and bring a new console out a lot sooner than the compeition if they see the need to.
How Nintendo fans will feel about that is anybodies guess, but I don't think the Wii has the technology to last 5 years.
Marumaro for the WIN !!
Maybe, just maybe, some people aren't really that fussed about the bump in visuals this gen brought with it.
The only way a system's tech won't last is if people decide it's too old. The DS is still selling like hotcakes with visuals straight out of 1996.

I think many Dev's are waiting for the PS3 to become more viable and more profitable.
Like i say though there isn't one game on the Wii yet that has made me want to buy the system, and in the future only Mario and Dragon Quest off the top of my head that i am looking forward to.
I think people are more attracted to the idea of the Wii (ie FUN) than what it has to offer, and that is why many people get bored with it so fast.
Although it could be that people are getting tired of Sony's ways and Nintendo is winning them back, but i wouldn't bet that the Wii will continue to be as sucessful as it has been.
If im honest i feel some form of anomosity towards Nintendo for making the Wii, because it could have been so much more than what it is, it's weird, we have Sony who has tried to hard and shoved too much into their system, and Nintendo who has barely tried at all and has put too little into theirs.
Micorsoft got it just right if you ask me. :)

Obviously they are planning for the PS3 to have a really long life cycle and if you look at it as a 10 year lifespan, sure PS3 does become much more viable for everyone. But at what cost in terms of marketshare and comparison to the competition? By the time PS3 can gain any kind of traction, Nintendo and Microsoft could be looking at new hardware.
What effect does having Sony being out of step with everybody else have? That's an interesting one. What I certainly don't agree with is the notion of this all happening in 2008. Sure the PS3 will be cheaper but so will everyone else, and probably by a similar margin.
And like Simon mentions, the Wii isn't going to go away and die. Nintendo can pull plenty of DS like tricks to keep hardware moving, different colours, the DVD Wii, Wii Mk2. The gravitas of third parties to it will only ensure it's here to stick around for a while. Whether the PS3 can create it's own market in that same environment remains to be seen I guess.
They will be forced next gen like they were this gen, i think by 10 years they mean it will continue to do well after the 4th playstation is released much as the PS2 is still doing well and the PS1 did before it.
Maybe as Simon say people aren't wanting graphics, but I can't help but think that people will see games on the PS3 and 360 and wish that Wii games could look as good as that.
You can throw your arms about in the air till you collapse of exhuastion but nothing will change the fact that Wii games are going to look (if not feel) very dated. (especially as we get closer to the end of the generation)
Marumaro for the WIN !!
That said, I'm not most people and HDTV penetration is very low. Of course it's not all about HD, PS3 and 360 are of course much more powerful and look miles better even at low res but if you design with that in mind and take a punt on the majority of those mass market customers not caring it may not be so influential.
If you are of the inclination to be put off by the Wii's graphics, I would suggest you are also more likely to be of the inclination to have multiple consoles.
Certainly we are all visual people, we'll see how it pans out.

Too Human- Believe!
Whereas Red Steel had to be released when they'd just gotten their first solution for controls working, I think Prime 3 will go through a number of different takes before arriving at one that kicks ass.
Red Steel worked, and it was fun and stuff.. but Prime 3 won't get away with being less than exceptional.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's pushed into 2008 personally, but we've got plenty of nice stuff coming in winter anyway. Galaxy and NiGHTS for instance. :O
