GSY Review PC PS4 Xbox One

After having the privilege to play the Gamescom demo of Journey to the Savage Planet back in August, we were granted "early access" to the review code about 10 days ago. It was more than enough time to discover Typhoon Studios' game peacefully so we can tell you what we think about it a day before release. Inside, you will find our verdict and a bunch of 4K videos of the PC version. Don't forget to join us for our 30-minute livestream tonight at 9:00.

Verdict

We had a truly great time playing Journey to the Savage Planet, which chose the perfect timing to cheer us up at a time when big exciting releases have become a bit more scarce. Sure, there is nothing incredibly original when it comes to its core gameplay mechanics, it's a mix of platforming, shooting (there are even 3 bosses) and exploration, but it all works very well. Collecting resources to craft new gear and to upgrade our equipment is never a constraint, discovering new areas never gets old and you're always rewarded for doing something (eating fruit increases your health and stamina, collecting carbon, silicon and other things allows you to build useful tools and make them more efficient, etc.). What's more, you can even enjoy the ride with a friend online, though there are no real cooperative mechanics per se. In the end, it's really a journey we want to recommend as it is clearly worth its price tag.
  • On the upside
  • A beautiful planet to discover
  • A bit of Metroidvania
  • The humor
  • The exploration
  • The possibility to play co-op
  • A very pretty game to look at
  • On the downside
  • Don't expect a mind-blowing story
  • Not that original in the end (not that we truly mind)

gorgeous game, i really want to jump in.
my only nitpick is the left hand moving back and forth, the animation is awkward and distracting imo.

I wish we could simply holster the gun and hide the left hand when we don't need to use it.
