GSY Review PS5

We are certainly to blame, but since the English-speaking community is definitely wearing thin, we cannot afford to put a lot of time and efforts in making video reviews in English anymore, at least not all the time. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be officially out in a few days now and we have translated our written verdict for those of you guys who still care a little about our opinion. You still have access to the French video review if you want to enjoy the great image quality, as well as a small image gallery (more will come later this week but for now that's all we're authorized to share).

Verdict

Just like in 2016, Ratchet & Clank are back and they're in very good shape in this brand new adventure. It is obviously very faithful to the series' DNA, which basically means that if you're looking for something bold and new you won't find it here, but also that if you're a fan, you're going to enjoy every single minute of it. Rift Apart proves once again that the guys at Insomniac are masters when it comes to using the most of the hardware they're given. It is true though that, however impressive going from one dimension to the other is, we feel that the mechanic could have been used more in puzzles or different kinds of situations. There are the scripted moments of course, the rifts that sometimes appear on the battlefield (or some of the platforming sequences) and make it possible to quickly teleport and the crystals found on one of the planets which allow to switch dimensions on the fly, but we wish there could have been more. It's clearly not that big a deal but the mechanic was promising enough to be pushed further in our opinion. We wouldn't have minded a few more locations too, especially since there is a bit of backtracking in this episode (though at different times of day or with different weather conditions), but that's probably us being nitpicky. That aside, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a lot of fun to play and it can be shared with your kids if you have some, so it'd be a shame to miss it as it releases on June 11.
  • On the upside
  • What a looker!
  • Typical Ratchet & Clank fun
  • Changing dimensions is impressive
  • Lightspeed loadings
  • Top-notch voice acting
  • Takes advantage of the DualSense
  • Three graphics modes to choose from
  • Photo mode is great
  • Tons of accessibility options
  • Motion blur, depth of field and more can be tweaked
  • On the downside
  • Some crashes & bugs (prior to the Day One patch)
  • Plays it safe
  • The dimension mechanic feels a bit pulled back
  • A bit of backtracking this time

Thanks for this!

Screenshots look amazing. I thought DS Remake looked excellent, and a great start to this gen. But this is different, this looks visually amazing.

Sweet, every other site seems to be just posting the same 4 press screens that accompany their review thumbnails. ^_^
