Yeah.. but you can only do so much upward failing before your investors start getting pissed.

And while Microsoft were treading water, Apple grew into the biggest tech brand in the world. And Google happened.

Things have been better in Redmond.

Rick Sherlund isnot to be trusted, there's an agenda there.

When he was at Goldman Sachs most of his stock calls were barely worth a damn, he bailed out with the rest of the rats that jumped ship back in 2011. It's always been amazing to me how in money and finance you can leave a sinking ship, have an abysmal record making calls and then suddenly your respected and revered just because you move to another company.

He doesn't provide any proof for his analysis that MS is actually hiding $2 Billion in losses. And he NEVER will because he NEVER provides proof. Because he's not a real tech analyst anymore, he's a speculator. An inbreed HACK. He's been sucking Value Act's cock for months now. He's become their new mouthpiece. For those not aware, VA is trying very aggressively to kick Bill Gates out of the company that he built.

Sherlund HATES the Xbox Division, he wants to see it spun off or sold along with Bing He's been steadily building a case against it for months now, but he's not going to mention at all that LIVE actually earns $3 Billion as minimum and that the division would naturally post losses this year because of everything they're spending on R&D, manufacturing and marketing.

I hate that MS never ever responds to his analysis because he really needs to be corrected in a loud and as publicly embarrassing manner as possible. I agree MS needs a visionary at the top to shake things up, but they have always been generous to their investors. I guess that makes me obviously bias against his analysis, but bullshit is still bullshit.

What I mean is that investors have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to be pissy about. The stock isn't performing but MS still pays HUGE dividends to investors, perhaps the LARGEST in corporate existence. They've split the stock 9 times and distributed more than $65 Billion of the company's EARNINGS to investors over the last 10 years. And they didn't stop there. They even bought back a net of 2.6 billion shares of their stock, which represents a value of $70 billion(in 2012). So when you add it all up, over the last decade Microsoft gave back $134 billion out their total $139 billion in earnings. To investors that would be an earnings conversion ratio of 92%.

What other company out there is returning 92 cents of every dollar back to shareholders? So again, what would MS investors ever have to be pissed off about?

And please don't bring the great patent troll into this.

That's pretty funny because he's actually accused plenty of people over the years of being evil.

Oh, before I forget. Sorry for the temporary derail Phaethon :(

This isn't a derail. The future of Microsoft and how they dump money into their consumer divisions is on topic.

This is just wrong, there is plenty to be fussy about with Microsoft and how they're handling their stockpiles of cash, and their inability to fully-commit to their various projects that are floundering (bing, mobile, xbox, tablets). New leadership is a sign of hope that Microsoft will re-focus itself as a company, something investors and analysts have been calling for for more than a decade. Change is coming to microsoft, and I'm lucky enough to be bearing the fruits of all of this as I invested in MSFT when it was $26/share, which if you do the math has been an enormous ROI for ol' scoobs

Apparently even CEO candidate Stephen Elop sees the Xbox as dead weight. Bing too. Point is, they aren't leading in any industry they don't have a monopoly in at the moment. I don't think anybody sees Microsoft's success relative to their cash as a plus.

Even Sony will probably entertain splitting up again before this generation is through. Apparently they came a lot closer to spinning off SCE than even Kaz will admit.

I'd be surprised if Bing is still a thing in 2020. Sure would be interesting if microsoft sold xbox to someone... wonder who would buy it? Samsung was rumored to be interested in the console market.. or wouldn't it be funny if Google bought it?

Wow, Elop? That's NO GOOD. I've heard some of his comments over the years. Elop would leave us gamers with nothing, he's no fan of gaming in any respect. Elop felt that Microsoft should have long gutted the Windows Gaming division. Elop would KILL IT ALL, Xbox Division, Windows Gaming, Microsoft Game Studios..........EVERYTHING. If he couldn't find immediate buyers I don't think he'd even waste his time bothering even to firesale all of those divisions.

I don't know how the industry would react to this, gaming has enough weakness as it is. Seriously, do you go out and invest in a new console with this kind of cloud hanging over head?

Eh, you can always find another gaming solution, that's not the issue. Although I don't relish the idea of every gaming experience being moved to phones and tablets, because that's about where we're all headed unfortunately. Our way of gaming is slowly going the way of the dinosaurs.

My thing is that Elop is the last person Microsoft should be considering to turn the company around. He single handedly drove Nokia into the fucking ground. He destroyed every single software platform they had established, killed off their smart phone division(wtf?), and took a company that used to sell 70-80 million phones a year to barely selling 10 million per quarter.

It's like I said before, I don't understand the corporate, money and finance culture. I don't understand how a person who fucked up as royally as Elop did with Nokia can still be considered a leading candidate for one of the largest and profitable companies on the planet. It's like everyone has amnesia, or after a major screw up all of your sins are forgiven once you announce you're looking for another job.

If Elop is being considered it shouldn't be for his leadership or vision. He has none.

Well the guy got $7bil out of Ballmer making mid-range phones so he must know something. But he's not the only one dissatisfied with the Xbox division. Investors want it gone as well so they may rally behind him. I actually think he's likely to get it with Microsoft clearly investing in him and Nokia.

I think Nvidia would be a good suitor for taking the reigns. They could get into gaming hardware without having to sell Shields.

There was some talk about Bungie getting out of dodge due to this uncertainty to begin with, which makes it a bit more likely to me than it normally would.

I don't think Elop is a good choice, but I haven't agreed with a choice MS has made in a long time.

Investors always call for this sort of thing, they want Sony to sell off there Entertainment division as well, a move Sony is still mulling over, but who's to say if they both do it, that it's bad for gamers, it might be a good thing.

Its all about what's good for the stakeholders, they'll do whatever is best for the overall company... not what's best for gamers. Could the money and hours they're throwing at Xbox and Bing be better spent elsewhere? Maybe. Maybe not. Xbox is ingrained in peoples minds as the go-to gaming console right now, so there is a lot of value in owning it. I am super curious who they'll hire and what he's gonna do to chagne things up within microsoft.

Well I don't think MS will be selling off the Xbox Division at all. Looks like this whole thing may have been drummed up by supporters of Elop's camp for his candidacy. Just like I thought, the entire thing is agenda driven by Elop/Value Act supporters. I've seen this shit happen everytime there's some major changing of the guard at some big corporation.
"We appreciate Bloomberg's foray into fiction and look forward to future episodes." said Frank Shaw, a spokesman for Microsoft
I was so pleased that Microsoft broke protocol to answer this rumor directly. And in a year when they've really stumbled about with communication, this was really one of the best PR responses Microsoft has had in a long time. lol

My guess is EA would take turn10, Activision 343i. Lionheart and other studio not sure.

Competition is good. OpenGL is probably faster than directx but sadly there is monopoly and OpenGL is pc is pretty much dead. If you search and ask lots of programmers they will say OpenGL is better. Tessellation was in OpenGL before directx as well. Direct8, 8.1 to 9, 9.0b, c was really good and Directx10 was basically a scam.

I don't think most people will be able to tell but on the interwebs, the resolution and people calling it Xbox 720 now. Microsoft is getting so much shit. I agree with frozpot people looking at numbers would sway away from Xbox even though they are interested in it.
