The amount of potential game braking powerups/abilities is a bit worrying to be honest. And from the looks of things, these powerups are obtained as weapon drops to your feet after a kill streak which makes things even worse.
343.. happily following. If they include killstreaks and unlocks.. well.. they already failed.

Can't wait for Marathon.

The power-ups only last for 30 seconds, there are clear visual indicators that tell other players what powerup a person is using, and with regards to the armor abilities, like for instance, Promethean Vision, there is a sound indicating to players within range that someone has pegged their location using it, which gives players a bit of a heads up, and that may not be all they do from the sounds of it. I personally can't speak to Halo mutli, because I've only really ever played it during the Halo 3 beta, but can't people customize the hell out of multiplayer games and decide what to include, and what not to include?

Couldn't players historically just choose not to have certain weapon types, certain armor abilities, or certain powerups? If that's the case, are these changes/additions really such a big deal? And from what I was watching, even though the game isn't done being made yet, I really didn't see anybody having this huge advantage. Skill should still play a pretty big factor, and it isn't like the drops can't be stolen from the player that calls for them.

But then, I don't really see so huge a difference between individuals even with powerups or certain abilities that it would warrant serious concern. Sure, there's a variety of power-ups, armor abilities, but I don't know if I see any one thing that is lightyears beyond everything else. You can't even shoot when you use the booster pack. You can't shoot when you use the hardlight shield, and you're also in third person. There is unlimited sprint, but then if you're busy sprinting everywhere, you also aren't shooting very much, either. And it isn't like sprinting makes you impossible to kill. My biggest concern by far is the more damage power-up. That's the one that concerns me, but then it's only a 30 second thing. However, for all we know, you can create games where absolutely no power-ups are allowed, and I don't see why they wouldn't do that.

The concern is that they're ripping ideas right out of Call of Duty instead of sticking to what makes the game Halo. The concern is that 343 is at home borrowing ideas instead of developing their own. The concern is that kill streak rewards are lame, and spawning as kits (sorta present in Reach) is a little out of place in Halo to begin with. The concern isn't simply a "power ups, bad!" thing. It says a lot about 343 in my opinion if they are simply willing to follow. And I know you don't really play Halo online, but most people play matchmaking most of the time, and we'll be limited to their game settings and not our own custom rules. I imagine an MLG-type playlist will make a quick appearance though.

I was worried the moment I saw the leaked loadout screens.. and they haven't done a whole lot to reduce those concerns.

Nothing is definitive thankfully. Reach already borrowed a bit.

But hey lets talk about books again.

Not that it can't be good. Just big shoes and all that. The campaign looks pretty cool so far and I'm hopeful that MP will be good too. At the very least there should be a lot of options for custom games as Optimus suggests.

The MLG Pro gamers all seem to love MP, one of them even said its the best EVER made Halo!
Eight of the top pro gamers from Major League Gaming got the chance to play the new Halo 4 multiplayer for the first time during E3 this week. They competed against one another in a series of five games across various different maps and game types (to see the game footage with commentary head over to MLG.tv).

Brett "Naded" Leonard was one of the eight pros to get his hands on Halo 4 and he had a lot of good things to say about the game. In fact, he recently updated his status on Facebook saying he thinks it will be the best Halo game yet.

"I will stand by my statement that Halo 4 is going to be the best Halo ever made. Everything about it is so much fun, gameplay is classic Halo." -Naded

Bah, pros, what do they know? Heh, on a serious note, though, I don't expect any pro that I think got a special invite to play the game to then turn around and say negative things about the game. It would come off as both unappreciative of the opportunity to play a still in development game earlier than others and disrespectful to the, I'm sure, very nice people at 343 they got the chance to meet and speak with in person. So I expect all pros that played the game to be very politically correct and cautiously optimistic about the direction of the game, because they don't want to offend the people they had a chance to meet in person, and that obviously now them pretty well, too.

You know, they want to consider feelings and such. For example, go back to what they all said about Reach and other Halo games. Have these same pros ever come away from playing the new Halo, and said something overtly negative? I doubt it, because they want to remain respectful to the devs for allowing them the opportunity. Still, I understand, at least as a long time competitive cs 1.5/1.6 player, why people would naturally hate things such as ordinance drops, instant respawns, powerups and certain armor abilities, and even tactical packages.

However, that's what custom competitive rules and playlists are for. For the people who want their MP gameplay experience to be packed full of all the new additions that 343 has included, they can willingly choose to have that, just as some counter-strike public servers chose to have deathmatch settings, chose to allow things like the noobish riot shied, or chose to have things such as the warcraft mod applied to their servers. As long as you can customize to your heart's content exactly what kind of MP experience you want, then these changes are fine.

I understand that Halo is a sandbox and probably all of these things can be disabled, so I hope they get the playlists right for competitive games. We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out, it will take a few months of MP to really see if any of these powerups and abilities break the game. I just don't like how they seem to be adding too many unnecessary features which is kinda what killed the lasting appeal of Reach for me.

Kill streak rewards should have no place in a Halo game. Terrible idea.

I don't have very much blind hype for the MP. In fact, I wouldn't even say I have average hype for the thing. if you notice, 99.9% of my excitement is around the SP and Spartan Ops. I'm only showing whatever MP stuff I find, because I know you guys are interested in that mostly. If it weren't for the SP, I wouldn't even care about this game, even with Spartan Ops.

And you're right, Grift, I don't use xbox live very much at all, especially for multiplayer gaming. Even when you say matchmaking, I have absolutely no idea what you mean by that or how the term applies to the way Halo does things. But if I understand you, players can't choose what kinds of MP games they play in, meaning if someone thinks Armor Lock and the jetpack in Reach blows, they can't play games that strictly ban or restrict those things? If that's honestly the case, then Halo MP truly isn't as good as it was hyped to be for all these years. I thought Halo MP was all about choice and customization. Or are you pretty much at the mercy of whatever the dev decides to throw in there, regardless of your preferences?

Need a good article on Halo MP and what it's all about :P

Yea, that may very well be Charum Hakkor, the planet where the Halo was first tested by the Forerunners. It's also one and the same planet where ancient humanity was keeping something imprisoned that calls itself the last precursor.

Armor Abilities

Much like the GEN1 armor, Mjolnir GEN2 Powered Assault Armor offers component modularity, which enables users to add hardware to their armor, dramatically modifying their combat faculty and performance. The impressive aspect of this attribute is that Mjolnir's firmware is capable of detecting and translating non-native technology, including the technologies used by Covenant and Forerunner forces.
I love reading the little fiction justifications for things :)
Tactical Packages

Technological advancements to Mjolnir GEN2 armor offers Spartans a seamless integration of armor mods to improve their proficiency during battle. Among these are Tactical Packages: software updates that increase Spartans' combat readiness and responsiveness when configured within their loadout.
Support Upgrades

With the recent proliferation of Mjolnir GEN2 armor comes a variety of armor mods, capable of enhancing a Spartan's combat performance in the field. Critical to these are Support Upgrades, technology-based enhancements to a Spartan's armor functionality when introduced into their loadout. Support Upgrades focus on augmenting combat resiliency during firefights and other combat scenarios.
Spartan IV

In the wake of the SPARTAN-III project's success, ONI secretly commissioned the activation of another project under the direction of CINCONI Admiral Margaret Parangosky: the SPARTAN-IV project. These super-soldiers were handpicked military veterans who were capable of physical augmentation and met the litany of prerequisites in order to wear Mjolnir armor, and receive the title of Spartan.
Spartan IVs, with the exception of being taken as children, sound like the most true recreation of the genetic specimens that were chosen by Halsey as the best suited for her Spartan II Program. The Spartan IVs sound like they'll be Spartans potentially at the level of the Chief and other Spartan IIs, only they already come with advanced military training. Well, nobody is quite as badass, or as lucky, as the Chief, of course.
Promethean Crawlers

The Forerunner machines known as Crawlers are the most abundant native enemy on Requiem. Capable of both close-quarters and long-range combat, Crawlers are aggressive quadrupeds, explicitly engineered to ferociously hunt down and eliminate any foreign threats. Traveling in large packs, Crawlers work together in strategic coordination to bring down enemies by overwhelming them from every angle.
Further confirmation that these things aren't forerunners.
Promethean Knights

Residents of the artificial world of Requiem, Promethean Knights represent the central occupying enemy force. Knights are extremely capable combatants with ancient and mysterious origins. While they are different from the legendary Forerunners, Knights are no less harrowing. They are fully weaponized, heavily armored bipedal warriors, easily capable of engaging threats in almost all environments.
I suspected these things would heal
Promethean Watcher

The large, flying sentinels of Requiem known as Watchers are deployed from the armored carapace of Knights and exist to provide strategic aerial support. Hovering high above the battlefield, Watchers heal allies and frustrate the opposition by catching and returning incoming ordnance, such as grenades, using a gravity-displacement beam.

Hey, Manthatyoufear, maybe this Promethean Knights are former forerunners turned into AI combat units by the still very mysterious "Composer" that forerunners use. It can apparently manipulate and somewhat control those that have been infected by the flood, and it can take the mind of any flesh and blood individual, human, forerunner, whatever, and turn them into a machine artificial intelligence. That's how Chaka's mind was placed into what eventually became known as 343 Guilty Spark. Maybe somebody used the composer to create these things, and perhaps the Didact that we face in this game, may not be the true Didact at all, but an AI warrior recreation of the original Didact, with all the Didacts knowledge etc. Remember, we can only ever assume what happened to the original Didact. We don't really know for certain. Maybe the Master Builder sought to make a version of the Didact that was loyal to him.

Maybe this is where Halo 4's story is going.
