One of the things that I loved reading from one of the previews that I saw, was that this isn't a case of 343i picking out the best screens or video sections. This is what the actual game really looks like, no bullshit. :) But I'm far more exciting about the stuff I've heard regarding the story. It seems like, as suspected, the blue and orange lights covering the Prometheans has very special significance in the story.

One of the more exciting things for me about this game visually, is just how much better the proportions are for everything. Even in Halo Reach, a game in which Bungie made great visual strides, there were still times when things just looked 'off.' Maybe with this game's artistic design, the impression of truly being in these places that the Chief is in, is just all around more convincing than it has been with previous games. And it isn't just a case that the immediate impression, that significantly more polygons have been added to the surrounding environments, is necessarily real or true, but that 343i has done a pretty damn good job of giving us that impression with the way they've most likely faked it.
What I mean is we know that this is a heavily damaged section of a pretty large UNSC ship. This thing, in it's original, undamaged condition is meant to have a crew and house individuals much greater in number than what we are likely to see in the opening level, and the ship actually looks that way. It genuinely looks in terms of size and functional appearance to be precisely what the fiction says it's suppose to be, and I haven't always felt as if Bungie got that message across to players as well as they would have liked a lot of the time. Bungie were always better with the non-human environments, like Covenant ships, forerunner structures, you name it. With major parts of Halo 3, and to a lesser, but still significant enough degree with Halo Reach, you felt as if some play spaces were precisely that, play spaces, excuses to give the player space to run around and shoot at enemies, which in effect is precisely what they are, but it always came off way too obvious for its own good. I would always think quietly "This place doesn't even look like anything that would remotely serve it's assumed purpose. It feels very off in some way." Halo while always being one of the best shooters out there, seemed to constantly get the size and proportions of its surrounding environments wrong. Even COD, a game not nearly as awesome from a gameplay perspective as Halo is, did a superior job of making the player feel as if they were truly in the locations where they were suppose to be. Modern Warfare 1 and 2 were pretty damn good at faking it. I can't speak for the later games, because I, quite frankly, have not played them.
The wide open environments were always very nice and amazingly well done in Halo, but once you arrived at some man made structure of some sort, a major part of the illusion would be lost and you would start hoping for another wide open environment or a distinctly covenant/forerunner environment. The early ship sections that we have seen from the Forward Unto Dawn in Halo 4 are easily some of the most convincing looking man made environments that we've ever seen in a Halo title. Often times a game's screenshots can be a bad representation of what the game actually looks like; with Halo 4, this is not the case. Way too many times in a Halo game, it can feel like the player too many times dwarfs a mostly insignificant surrounding environment. With Halo 4, it looks like the complete opposite.

Said it before and will say it again, the more you see of Halo 4, the more you realize how much the original creator, Bungie, were actually holding it back. Appreciate all they did with the previous games, and love them all, but there is zero excuse for Bungie to not have pulled something like this game off on the 360 in the 3 cracks at the system they've had, and to still come away saying they heavily underutilized the CPU on the system. I fully expect it to be revealed that they've put far more into their next project with Activision than they ever did with Halo on the 360, and I'm pretty excited to see what they've got planned. No way 343 should be able to do all this on their first attempt with so little experience with Bungie's engine, even with all that talent. But then, what 343 is doing with Halo 4 Is about much more than the visual. They seem to be taking the story and characters in a direction that was merely teased by Bungie.

And no, Optimus, most of all of the 720p screens are clearly bullshots and you can tell as much just by watching 720p video of the game. Or simply by observing the insane amount of anti-aliasing.
I also flatly reject the idea that Bungie held the franchise back.. just like I reject the circle jerking Halo hype over a game that none of us have actually played. You guys swallow hype whole. Chew your food.
You may disagree that Bungie have held it back, but the proof is in the pudding, and that's something you can swallow whole without chewing :P Bungie teased story development with the chief and cortana that simply never happened at all in Halo 3. The Master Chief in the books has always come off as more of a natural leader and more in depth character than the one we saw in the games. He won't make a bunch of cheesy speeches, but he talks far more than he is shown doing in the games. His character is far more interesting in the books than he has been shown being in the games. People get excited and hyped about games they haven't played all the time. Even you are guilty of this. Let's just all admit that this guy deserves every bit of praise it is getting so far. In just a few videos, this game has already showcased more potentially interesting Master Chief and Cortana character development than Bungie has done since Halo 2.
Bungie was/is a fantastic developer, and I'd have no complaints if they continued with Halo, but the fact that the massively untapped potential of the Halo fiction has failed to properly make the move on over to the games is a direct sign that Bungie has, in a funny way, actually been a roadblock to the further evolution of the franchise. I noticed some clear improvements in Reach, but then, that was held back by the simple fact that it didn't involve the Chief and Cortana. However, I loved that whole latchkey discovery thing and the fragment of Cortana, the Pillar of Autumn's last minute rendezvous on Reach, Noble Six risking his life to allow the Autumn to escape, and the connection that it ended up having with the discovery of the first Halo. It was all a very clever thing for them to do, albeit with a retcon or two, and there are a few other great things that they did as well. Halo needs more things like that, and while it was just a taste, 343 is going all in with Halo 4, and perhaps Bungie would have been forced to do the same, but I'm not so sure.

It's also pretty apparent that bungie "played it safe" with Halo 3 so that Microsoft could continue to milk the franchise. Still can't wait to see how much better Bungie's next projects will be.
I love what there doing as i'm a big fan of the fiction and story, and love that they are putting more into that part of it.
Prepare To Drop!!
I don't know about them playing it safe because Microsoft wanted to milk it. Anything Bungie wanted to do from a story and development standpoint with Halo 3, I'm sure they could have done, or probably did do. I really don't see Microsoft interfering on any major level with something as vital as the story for a game as big as Halo 3. If anything, Microsoft probably had them rush it out sooner than they would have liked, but that's about it probably. Only thing I can see Microsoft saying to them Is, "Don't kill off the Chief or Cortana," and I have serious doubts Microsoft would tell Bungie even that. Johnson and Miranda, for example, were both killed off. The revelation that the ark was rebuilding a replacement for Guilty Spark's original Halo installation was a pretty big revelation, and I always got the impression that Guilty Spark was about to say something regarding the Librarian until the Chief interrupted him, when 343 was wondering why precisely was there so much security and protection for that area on the Ark. The terminals for Halo 3 also apparently had info regarding the Didact, Librarian, the Primordial, Mendicant Bias, as well as Offensive Bias. And Guilty Spark DID mention a shield installation in Halo 3 as well. Halo 3 had its moments and I still love it, but I kinda expected more. I wonder if Bungie DID have an intent to make a Halo 4 in the future, but they maybe wanted to make their other game first, and Microsoft instead wanted them to make another Halo immediately instead? I guess I could see that situation.
Either way, it seems to have worked out for both parties. Halo seems to be in good hands, and Bungie has a killer deal with Activision, where they call the shots mostly, and they get to work on the game they've been wanting to make, I guess more than even Halo. So, that's always a good thing, I suppose. You don't want a team making a game they don't have a desire to make, after all.
And, yea, those shots aren't direct feed framebuffer, but that's what the game looks like in the videos that we have. Halo 4, from a visual standpoint, is hardly lacking compared to the screens. In fact, there are parts of Halo 4 that we've seen that look better than the exact same section in screenshot form. Take, for example, the forest in Halo 4. That section of the game looked even better than the screens, if only because it looks so damn good when it all comes together in motion.
