That's an incredibly unfair comparison, don't you think, considering the horribly low quality nature of that piece of audio? I've heard a lot of great stuff from marty, but then there's quite a bit of marty's work that this either sounds quite a bit better than, or is at the very least on equal par with, even if one disagrees that this is better than any of the best work marty has done.

My all-time favorite piece of music from marty is the flintstones kids jingle ( :P ) the various versions of the original halo theme, of course, but, more specifically this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKuSiu-_ByQ

From 4:35 on in that youtube video, I think that's quite possibly the most amazing, most badass thing I've heard from marty.

It's kinda unfair to judge the halo 4 music by saying it's not even close to marty's best without us getting a better source. Then again, all the same, I've also gone as far as to say it may be better than some of marty's works, so that may be a pretty flawed way for me to look at it as well. I won't say it's better than some of marty's best, because there is just some types of music that are just damn good and most appropriate for the mood they are trying to set, and it's kinda flawed to say that one might be better than the other.

Still, the Halo 4 music sounds pretty damn good. It gives off a pretty mysterious and menacing feeling about what's to come, but at the very same time it also gives off this strong sense of hope that something/someone heroic and historic and incredibly badass is up to the task. :) At least that's how I feel about it.

Music doesnt sound particularly halo-ish to me. That's either a sign they're not even remotely interested in staying true what bungie laid as a foundation (yey) or just that the composer isnt as good? Seriously, halo 2 had one of the best OST's ever imo. This isnt even close to that.

Agree to disagree, but in fairness, it is just one piece of low quality music. I hear quite a few parts of it that sound pretty haloish in nature.

And it may be tough to hear the obvious signs of vocal work in the music. Similar to the opening to the iconic halo theme. I'm not referring to toned down voice talking in the vidoc, there is haloish vocal work in the song as well. Listen to 2:03 to 2:07. It's in earlier parts as well. When we get clearer audio people will be able to hear this one in all its glory.

It's an unfair comparison because it really doesn't matter what music was playing in the background of that video (it's not necessarily going to be included in the final game), nonetheless all I'm saying is that the legacy the new composer has live up to is incredible. Yes, not every Halo track is a masterpiece (especially from Reach OST) but the best tracks are just amazing and the group of such tracks is huge. Quality woes aside, I don't think the music in the making of video is as good as (here's Halo 1's tracks only) Brothers in Arms, Covenant Dance, Under Cover of Night, Truth & Reconciliation Suite, A Walk in the Woods, On a Pale Horse. If you don't remember them, check them on youtube.

Halo 3 ODST soundtrack is Marty's magnum opus and probably will not be matched by any future Halo game.

Oh, right.. I forgot Reach had some legitimately new tunes. I'm still okay with it. Bring on newness.

I'm far more caught up on them taking steps backwards (removing bloom) and steps towards a deeper meta-game (COD/BF). That stuff just stinks.

No doubt, szaromir, I agree. Halo 4's composer has an incredible musical legacy to follow behind, and it should be interesting to see where they end up going with the music in Halo 4. I'm not too familiar with the Halo multiplayer terminology. What do you mean when you "bloom", Grift? Are you, by chance, referring to what oldschool hardcore counter-strike players such as myself call "recoil" or "spray control"?

I also agree with what others have said, I welcome something new. This music is new, yet at the same time kind of familiar also. If I recall, I think it was already confirmed that the traditional Halo theme won't be heard once in this new trilogy, that there will be an entirely new theme in place, or maybe I'm confusing this with what was said about Halo Reach. I also greatly welcome the sound design of the game, because a criticism I sometimes have about Halo, is that I'm not getting the feeling that the weapons I'm firing are really doing any serious kind of damage. Wouldn't mind seeing some changes made to the SP campaign's hit registration, as in more obvious signs that we are destroying the enemy with our weapons.

Now this may be hugely, hugely controversial, but I wouldn't mind a major change being made to the way enemies are killed and hit with bullets in the SP campaign. I'm completely fine with things being left as they've always been in the MP, especially for competitive purposes. But what do I mean about changing the way enemies are killed in the SP? I really want to see far better visual confirmation that these enemies are being littered with bullets. I want when I shoot them in the knee, to see them appropriately fall down on a single knee. I want the hit registration and the visual confirmation to be more like that of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, and not like the way it is in Halo 3 or even Reach. The visual feedback just isn't enough when you're hitting enemies in Halo games, and it gives off a damage sponge kind of feeling. Mass Effect, pretty surprisingly considering the kind of game that it was originally meant to be, does a noticeably superior job in this regard than Halo. This doesn't mean enemies have to go down as easily as they do in Call of Duty games, but I'd love if things were more like they are in Mass Effect 2 and 3. You really get the feeling that, regardless of how powerful the enemy is in Mass Effect 2 and 3, that you are doing serious damage with every bullet. If Halo fixed just this simple thing, it would make it an even greater success than what it already is, I believe. You essentially change nothing about how tough enemies can be, but please give us far superior visual feedback. Strong enemies in Mass Effect give the proper impression of being damaged, while still being able to fight back.

Also to add to this, I want for them to consider limb removal for aliens when we shot them , and more gore, as in haeds flying and green blood all over the place Gears style, this way it will add freshness to the game and while they are at it they will make the gunplay more inpactfull.

BUt what I saw in the Vidoc I really liked the way the AR moved.

Yea Optimus.. reticle bloom reflects accuracy, which appears absent (as is the decreased accuracy with each subsequent shot) in Halo 4. I guess people cried about it in Reach though, and there are gametypes that remove bloom from the pistol and DMR in that game as well (for shame). As for changing combat in SP.. no thanks.. the Halo dynamic of shield burst + headshot is what makes the game unique. They can not and should not remove that from any part of the game.

I've come to terms with the fact that, for me, there will never be a Halo campaign as good as the first, and I really don't care much. However I still care about the MP very much and the direction it took with Reach is worrying.

People didn't like the way the BR was made inaccurate in Halo 3 since it introduced randomized outcomes in evenly matched fights, even more so against higher skilled players. Reach took that to new extremes with this wonky reticle bloom, which was even less accurate. I'm glad this shit is (apparently) gone and we're at least getting a Halo 3 BR. It sounded way cooler anyway.

Reach was really a train wreck of a Halo game. It ruined almost every single aspect I loved about the franchise. The matchmaking was horrid. In order to please the whining kids who complained they can't "progress" in Halo as much as in CoD they just threw the old tried and tested skill based match up away. In a sandbox game like BF that might work since there are a gazillion of different types of activities you can be engaged in. But as much as Bungie wanted it to be: Halo never was a sandbox game. Halo was about getting thrown into a cage with a bunch of dudes, a few power weapons and duking it out with raw skill and teamwork. It's inconceivable to me how someone thought it'd be a good idea to match up scrubs against high skilled players in an arena shooter.

The final nail in the coffin were the armor abilities though. Crippling the character down to snail speed and giving him sprint is not my idea of a gained ability. Especially when "small" maps are multiples of the size of the small Halo 3 maps. The way I think about it is the way it was presented to us: Bungie came to realize how equipment ruined Halo 3 and simply replaced one ad hoc idea with another. The lack of speed and additions like armor lock made the game even slower as it already was with 5 shots to kill and reticle bloom.

TL/DR: Reach was fucking boring and marked the low point for the multiplayer side of the game. I remain skeptic about Halo 4 until I can play it myself.

Well I'm not as invested in Halo to care that much, but I quite like DMR and pistol bloom in Reach. I've never had the impression that bloom makes you less accurate if you're patient and you handle your weapon correctly. It's present in many of the other games that I play. Granted, I don't think it belongs everywhere. You have more experience with it, and I guess it's what the hardcore Halo crowd wants.

But, honestly.. it sounds like "progression" is an even bigger theme this time around. That's a bit of a worry for me still. I won't be all doom and gloom until I get more details though.

I'm skeptical of Halo 4 because I like Reach.. it's interesting to see someone skeptical for the opposite reason :)

All I want is a fast paced core game that is playable and enjoyable without any gimmicks, meta games and other "surprises". And I want that as a playlist from day one and not 3-5 months after release.

The reason why I didn't like any of the changes they made for Reach was because they force you to play the game a certain way, the boring way.

Oh, no, I don't want them to remove the shield burst and headshot aspect of the game, just make it all look as impactful as Mass Effect does. Same principle, but make it feel and look more rewarding to accurately shoot the crap out of people. There's nothing quite like watching shields fail in Mass Effect. I just would like for the visual feedback for people getting hit to look just as cool.

Yea, I also agree with you completely. That's hella noobie to remove such a thing. The more you fire a weapon full blast, the less accurate it should become unless you're skilled at predicting where the bullets will go as it becomes less accurate, hence where spray control comes in. They should definitely add that to Halo 4. Not having it in would be a mistake. But apparently this is pre-alpha stuff we are seeing, so perhaps it's just early. At least make shielded enemies spark far more, do something :P
