Not quite, most PS3 games came off worse because Cell and limited available memory was a lot harder to work with vs the more straight-forward architecture of the 360. The actual capabilities of the hardware weren't so big a factor. Not to mention the latter was out first and had another good year whilst the PS3 floundered.

This time round, engine capability between PC, PS4 and XB1 will be very similar. That a large range of PC's need be supported as well as old consoles for some titles will imply a certain degree of flexibility but it's going to be case of enabling a few settings, moving some sliders about and that's it. I imagine most Digital Foundry articles will be much of a muchness. Much like the GTA IV one. The pros and cons of each will balance out.
Interesting, also as blackhawk said lots devs are stating the same.

You're so full of it. Just because you couldn't "deny yourself a game" or two, doesn't mean you're any less responsible for supporting it. You were ready to bend the fuck over. And you still would.

Anything for the chief. Don't pretend like it bothered you much.

I have a lot more respect for the people who did support the concept and are continuing to.
I actually think the Xbox One lost a number of cool features as a result of this move, some of which are pointed out in my post. There's many aspects of it that I did like, so it's a balance between the two extremes, I think. The idea of giving away digital copies of games once you were done with them. That's out the window now, too along with family share.

It doesn't bother me one bit that I was willing to support the policies and actually pre-ordered my console when the policies appeared set. I also won't pretend as if the Xbox One didn't lose some cool and, in my opinion, forward thinking features, though, because it did. But this gives people less to complain about. :)

Yeah, but also what people are forgetting to mention, is that hocus pocus MS keeps throwing at us, THE CLOUD. Yeah, it might be jargon, but it might play a really great part. Devs will be able to use (standardized, always available) online processing power to compute stuff like the fancy effects you mention. Particles, physics, AI, etc etc. And that will be scalable throughout the console generation. So what the XB1 might be capable of at launch, might be radically different of what it might in 5-7 years. So, to use your words, it's not unreal to expect the Xbox One versions to run a bit better, and better with time.

No they really won't. Third parties especially, but generally speaking... you're way overstating this. It's not your fault though. It's been way oversold.

That is totally an unreal expectation.

RE: Lost features.

If Microsoft wanted to push direct download, they could still do sharing. They won't, but I still don't see why they couldn't treat them separately. Make your "Xbox Live Library" the share, and don't apply retail purchases to it.

How is that more confusing or more dangerous than the previous scenario? Not that it matters. What we get.. is what we get.

OMG this is the best news I have get all day. WOW this is massive. I got to say thanks to all gamers and consumers who stand again this and make their voice count. Thanks to everybody who didn't bend to Microsoft policies just for some halo. You guys are awesome.

Now I will wait for a xbone price drop and all the good games to come out and I will definitely will be getting it. If only they will drop Kinect as mandatory and make a 400$ SKU with out it, I will have got it next year for sure, but I will wait for price drop instead and will get the PS4 first.

"There’s a few things we won’t be able to deliver as a result of this change," Marc Whitten, v.p. of Xbox Live told Kotaku, "One of the things we were very exicted about was 'wherever we go my games are always with me.' Now, of course your physical games won’t show up that way. The games you bought digitally will. You’ll have to bring your discs with you to have your games with you. Similarly, the sharing library [is something] we won’t be able to deliver at launch."

Oh, I'm serious. It isn't like I don't see both sides of the issue, I do, but we are losing some cool things with this move, too.

Family share I could let people borrow and play my games miles away without giving them my discs. No need to worry about someone's kids or younger siblings mishandling your game, and forcing you to rebuy it. I could let someone borrow a game I own through Family Share and they could play it at the exact same time that I'm playing it, and they wouldn't have to actually own the game or have the actual game disc. Normally when you let someone borrow your physical game disc, you can't play it while they have it because they have the disc you need. Family share made it so that you could have your cake and eat it, too. Let Phaethon borrow my game, and then I could still play it while Phaethon was borrowing and playing it. All that would be required was Phaethon making sure he was connected to the internet.

Neither one of us would require a physical disc.

It is nice to see that Microsoft have accepted the criticism and chosen to adjust their plans and strategy, rather than ignore the customer base. In the past Microsoft have admitted to mistakes and sought to rectify them, though at least this time they've done it before releasing the console.

They seem incapable of not sparking controversy at least once with each console during its first year.

Xbox (the first one (1), that came before the 360): £300 at launch, then reduced price leaving some feeling out of pocket. Rectified by giving early adopters 2 games for free and an additional controller.

Xbox 360: The Red Ring of Death, an attrition rate (%) higher than some global pandemics, I'm on my 4th or 5th (lost count, all replaced at the expense of Microsoft).

I would like to point out that in addition to an Xbox 360, I also have a PS3 (I don't play many games on it much, I use it mainly for DVD and Blu-ray). I preordered an Xbox One as soon ShopTo allowed it, and I do plan on buying a PS4 (so as to play its exclusive titles) in 3-4 years. I would also like to add that calling the third generation Xbox, Xbox One, is beyond retarded. It would be comparable to a Father naming his son Dad.

No, it probably won't in the long run. Not entirely. Because there's no real reason you can't actually have it both ways. Which is why this was always a shitty argument in the first place.

Yeah, this. I'm totally with Optimus on this. i think MS had a clear vision of an inevitable digital future, and minus the 24h thing, i think it was a ok implementation and i couldn't be bothered with the "restrictions" (since i live with way worse, on steam and iOS). But it was more than obvious that MS would bend to the response from the winny gamers. (And before anyone say fanboy, i own ps3 vita 360 pc).
The log in at my friends place and play my games feature was awesome. Sad to see it go.

Then buy your games digitally. You'll still be able to access your digital content from the cloud. It's game sharing that won't be available at launch, not accessing your own games from an X1 you're logged into.

See, now all of a sudden the system becomes broken and convoluted. Whereas before it didn't matter, now it's just like the ps4's system.

Eg: i log in at friends place, only to find out that shit, that the game we wanted to play from my account, was the one i was offered as a present as a disc (since i only download games), and we cannot play it.

Edit: MS had a vision, a clear one, with some problems in it's implementation (24h thing): while disc still exist, they probably won't in 3, 5, 7 years. So, they decided to treat them all (disc or download) the same way. Now, with the scrapped procedures, we're in a messy limbo, contrary to what most might think in my opinion.

There's no way in hell this system is more convoluted than a one that allowed people to gift or trade their games once, to a limited audience, and made them register and un-register their retail purchases when they wanted to do this.

You probably know which games you own on disc and which are downloads. Why didn't you bring the disc to your friends house? You can still do that.

I'll just quote here user poplin from the kotaku article i posted above, who is spot on and to re-enforce my own point of view:

"nope. it's a loss. it's a win for shortsighted "gamers" who can't grasp a technological paradigm shift. I was excited for digital re-selling and sharing. That's gone. I was also excited to be able to play whatever game I owned without having to swap discs, and lend games to friends by simply adding them to my "family" and telling them "dude, you're added, download it and tell me what you thought"." End of quote.

Naturally, i'm happy that MS took out the drm checks, if not doing it meant the console would flop, and then a console gamming landscape only dominated by one player would be disastrous for us gamers. On the other hand, i'm sad to see MS no sticking to their vision.

Microsoft could have given you both. You kind of have to wonder what they really had to lose giving you all those features with digital copies and leaving game discs alone. Digital purchases and physical copies have never been treated the same. This was a power play pure and simple.

I'm sorry that the more enamored gamers had to see their shiny bobble taken away.

It's also worth noting that MS had another bad showing on National TV on Jimmy Fallon's show, allowing for Sony to again elicit crowd favor http://youtu.be/Csr6ahk5RMg?t=1m12s

we are losing some cool things with this move, too.
-Full Game Library Travel...........gone

-Family&Friends Sharing.............gone

-Digital Gifting and Selling...........gone

-One Time Register To Play Your Games From Anywhere...........gone (now you have to carry the fuckin disc with you for validation)

-Continuous Updates From Developers...............Not completely gone, but gimped because of no online req.

*sigh*

The future IS being connected with your friends and gaming together. The future IS digital distribution. The future IS broader ways of sharing and having your library with you wherever you go.

The future is NOT swapping discs. The future is NOT in physical media. The future is NOT stand alone gaming systems that never need to be connected. The future is NOT offline single player.

So gamers don't want to be connected, they're afraid of change, afraid of the future. And they want to continue to swap physical discs AND be fucked by their local retailer. They don't want to see cheaper prices because they want to continue supporting a multi-billion secondary market that siphons profits from the game industry.

It's nice to see that the consumer still holds some power with this stuff. What a shit show. Think they lost a lot of money reversing this stuff?

The issue of indies always needing a publisher is still problematic however

Also Grim, if that were ever the message MS clearly communicated, it'd be a different story
