Ryse may not be what some of you want to play................but it's fine example of graphically what the Xbox One can do. And this is just a launch title And for those of us who actually intend to give a launch title a chance before condemning it, there's some backround into the story of Ryse. :)

Marius. The hero of “Ryse: Son of Rome,” Marius is a young soldier with a strong sense of duty who is completely dedicated to Rome and her ideals. Initially eager to fight against Rome’s enemies and expand the Empire, he soon realizes that Rome is vulnerable to an even more insidious threat than the barbarians he faces on the battlefield. Ever loyal to Rome, he resolves to rid the Empire of her true enemies.

Vitallion. A wise and charismatic general who has served Rome for decades, Vitallion has fought in many campaigns and serves as a mentor to Marius. As events transpire he begins to wonder if duty has its limits, and whether self-restraint is always the correct course of action.

Nero. Nero, Emperor of Rome, struggles to maintain his grip on power. He promotes his two sons Commodus and Basillius to powerful positions, letting them take control of the rebellious province of Britannia. Nero feels threaten by all potential rivals and exacts ruthless retribution against anyone who crosses him.

Commodus and Basillius. As governor of Britannia, Nero’s eldest son, Commodus, sees himself as a god, and the people of Britannia as his subjects. His reign is characterized by brutal repression. Nero’s youngest son, Basillius, enjoys anything carnal or cruel. At the Colosseum he delights in watching gladiators kill each other, and lords over the terrified slaves he keeps in his harem in the bowels of the structure.

Boudica. The daughter of King Oswald, the ruler of the Britons. Strong and resilient, Boudica hates Rome, and with good reason: under Roman rule, her people are made to suffer horribly. When her father faces horrific retribution from a perceived insult, it galvanizes Boudica and she rallies her people to rise against their oppressors. Boudica is a principled woman and has the will to go to the ends of the world to save her people.

Oswald. Benevolent king of the Britons. He leads a rebellion against the tyrannical rule of Rome, but when the Romans brutally repress the rebels, Oswald submits to Roman dominance in hopes this will spare his people. His naivety leaves him vulnerable to the Romans.

Glott. Enigmatic leader of the Northern barbarians, rumored to be more beast than man. Very little is known about him except that he is fiercely independent and will make war on both the Romans and Oswald’s tribe.

The Spirit Gods. Immortal spirit, one who watches over humanity, guides Marius. She appears in mortal form, but radiates an otherworldly aura. Another (known in mortal form as Aquilo) seeks the destruction of Rome and allies himself with her enemies.

Ryse: Son of Rome" follows Marius Titus, a young Roman soldier who must avenge the murder of his family at the hands of barbarian bandits. As he rises through the ranks of the Roman army, Marius' quest for vengeance will take him to the barbarian-infested shores of Britannia, and eventually straight into the heart of Rome.

Crytek has always been amazing with graphics, theyve also been pretty bad at making good games. Based on what we've seen, this looks to be the case yet again

Wonder why that is? Hmmmmmmmmm

Crysis and crysis:warhead had some redeeming aspects to them for sure... but they felt incomplete, story was garbage, character development was pitiful. But my god were they gorgeous. What I really loved about Crysis was how open it felt, and deciding on how you wanted to approach different objectives, from what I've heard that aspect is completely gone in Crysis 2.

I know, but we all know that this game used to be Kinect exclusive. I'm wondering if we should support it or not. There are so many shooters in development coming, and I think it's important to show interest when a major developer tries something they're not known for. Maybe they won't get the combat right the first time, but I still like the concept and see potential in this as a franchise. In other words they can build on this.

I've actually wanted to play a game as a Roman legionnaire with a story that's close to what I saw in the movie Centurion, but it looks like this story has supernatural elements involved.

I'm def getting Ryse at launch. It's a launch game so expectations aren't too overthetop. I'm interested, it reminds me of batman arkham combat, it reminds me of Spartacus, it will have gladiator in the coliseum MP. I don't mind spending some time with it even if it isn't perfect, but I have a feeling it will be much better than the E3 demo. Just prove to me that the executions really aren't that quick to appear. Show me that battles can be more drawn out like Crytek claimed during E3, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it even more. There should be plenty of new footage of the game prior to launch, so it's only a matter of time.

I've been one of Crytek's biggest critics on here, but if people want to know why their biggest critics like this game or are hopeful about it, it's because this game is more interesting than any of the other games they've made. It's genuinely different. They're making a third person sword combat game now that has a similar basic combat system to what's in batman, and it screams Spartacus. Not a single person here can claim that the E3 demo was somehow a fantastic gameplay demonstration, but at least it's a much better than expected look at a game that many really weren't expecting very much from if they weren't fans of Crytek's previous games, and who were also extremely worried about a sword based game with Kinect. Fact is this is new territory for Crytek, and things could be looking much worse. People think the only reason people want this game is because it's an xbox one launch game? New console, big release. Sure I can see that, but people don't buy games they don't want or have zero interest in. Sometimes all people want is something that looks different. If there were a similar game doing what Ryse is trying to do, but doing it on a far higher level, then that's where we would be, but only one game to my knowledge is scratching the itch that Ryse looks poised to make attempt at scratching.

Just as an example, before the Ultimate Ninja Storm games came around, the only next gen Naruto game that was scratching that itch for Naruto fans was Ubisoft's Rise of a ninja games, but once those Ultimate Ninja Storm games came, it was like naruto fan heaven, but I still appreciated Ubisoft's titles for what they were at the time. They scratched an itch that I as fan of Naruto felt needed scratching on a next gen system. Yea, something else may come along and do something similar to what Ryse is doing, but for now Ryse is the only one basically giving me Spartacus on a next gen console.

Nope. It's because people are so desperate for launch content that they'll play horrible games and make up excuses to like them. Even if they've criticized the legitimately good games that same developer has made in the past.

Yeah, it's pretty hypocritical, but also very predictable. And now people are quick to give you grief about it because it's so transparent, and because you've ridiculed Crysis in the past a considerable about. For no particularly good reason. I know it didn't have anything to do with the gameplay. Now you're taking what has showcased nothing but awful gameplay moments and pretty graphics and hyping it. Come on...

Was the book really good or something?

I honestly think you're just trying to convince yourself that its going to be good Op. It does not look good. I'm sorry friend. And it certainly doesn't look better than their previous games, which were mediocre shooters. Crysis 1 is still the best game they've ever made, and I've seen no reason to think this will be anywhere near that quality.

And honestly... since when have you had a "rome gladiator hack and slash" itch? Is that an itch?

The story blurb dose sound interesting, but the gameplay looks like it will get repetitive very fast, unless they manage to mix it up and vary it a lot. If anything atleast it will be a looker :)

Spartacus Blood and Sand
Spartacus Gods of the Arena
Spartacus Vengeance
Spartacus War of the Damned

Sometimes you don't know what you want until you see it, and think, "Hmm, this seems cool."

For example, I had no interest in a Naruto game from a publisher like Ubisoft that gave me a full 3D Konoha village that I could explore to my heart's content until I actually saw one being made. Sure, I thought there's all kinds of ways this can end up going wrong, and I know for damn sure it won't be perfect and will have its fair share of flaws, but this is a game that I feel like I want to support. I never look at someone's justifications for liking a game, if they seriously do have interest in it, as an "excuse". Basically, I don't see that as being particularly fair, because people have all sorts of games that catch their interest. People will like what they like. To me, Crytek has always made very arcade style games where a lot of things really just felt 'off' about the game. Their attempts at customization, freedom and choice, in all their games I've played, largely didn't really feel fully baked, at least not for me. It felt like there was no point to me putting much thought into my approach, and that same feeling carries to Ryse, and I don't deny that for a second. However, I feel the tendency for their games to feel that way could be more at home in a third person action title such as Ryse that is more or less a Spartacus game that plays a bit like the batman games from what I can see.

I have much more interest in a third person action combat game in this type of setting and with this kind of gameplay style compared to what Crytek has made in the past. It shouldn't be surprising that people want it to be a good game. Yea, I already know it won't be perfect. Ubisoft's Rise of a Ninja and its follow-up were by no means perfect, either, and I knew that full well going in. The animations and art style were largely inferior compared to something like Ultimate Ninja Storm from CyberConnect2, or even by the standards of the good PS2 and Gamecube Naruto games. The only thing Ubisoft's games really did better was a fully 3D and explorable Konohagakure village, but beyond that, they didn't quite capture the essence of the Naruto manga/anime and its combat quite like Cyberconnect2 did. And maybe something else will come that takes what Ryse is doing and does it much better, but for now Ryse is very much the only game in town at launch on a next gen system that I've pre-ordered. Plus, it looks like a nice title to show off my Xbox with. And alluding a bit to what Grift said, it's a launch game on a new console, so I'm not exactly going to be a picky eater.

@BlackHawk, that footage looks interesting. Can't wait to see beta gameplay footage. That pre-alpha shown is more or less their E3 build I guess.

One of the best things about Dead Rising was just how smooth it looked. It had great motion blur on the characters too. This definitely doesn't look impressive technically. I do like what they've done to improve the zombies.

Zombies remembering their past lives is a nice touch, as it adds some variety to the zombie types. It opens up some interesting possibilities alongside the crazy human boss fights. I don't agree with it not looking impressive technically. As it stands right now, it's one of the most technically impressive next gen games announced while also looking like one of the most genuinely fun to play.

It looks more impressive technically for its time than either of the first two dead rising games did. It's a total no contest and it's doing so while looking far more open, with many more possibilities than the originals ever had. The most impressive aspect of the original dead rising to me was the number of enemies on screen at once and that realistic looking effect they achieved in the game's cutscenes, particularly in the opening cutscene of the first game where I believe the main character was taking pictures of the disaster areas. There were times when I thought it looked downright real, but beyond that it isn't even close in my view. This game is doing too much to not be considered impressive technically.

The lighting looks rock solid, indoors and out, as does the shadows. The shadows are probably more impressive when you consider the number of zombies that we're dealing with. The particle effects look pretty damn good, the texture quality and the environmental detail also look pretty damn good. The environment looks very dense and busy in all the right ways. Basically, it's about as good as you could hope for a game like this to look while still offering all that gameplay freedom in an openworld overrun with zombies, and at launch no less. In the vidoc a lot of the details look washed out, but any look at the E3 footage, or the direct feed put out during E3 will show that this game has a pretty strong level of detail.

Their biggest challenge, as far as I see, is fixing that framerate and making it rock solid. If they can manage that, then that will probably easily put it over the top.

Some random Ryse gifs. Would love to see that forest looking level, and the other cutscene gif looks pretty awesome. I wasn't expecting all this from the game. And now it looks like there's some major fantasy or otherworldly elements tied in, which shouldn't be surprising for a Crytek game, but I'm still surprised to see it happening in Ryse.

Yea, I can already hear the crowds lining the blocks for a book based on a Crytek game. ;)

That said, what I mean is I wasn't expecting the game to take itself so seriously from a overall presentation and story standpoint, and not even from a gameplay standpoint. Maybe it's me, but I expected far less than what I'm seeing. Being surprised by what you're getting doesn't just have to be focused on graphics. This doesn't even mean the story, or the game itself, will be any good, but I expected something a lot more detached from any serious attempt to do some of the things this game is trying to do, and now we're learning about the involvement of spirit gods, potentially undead, legendary warriors being brought back from the dead etc. I expected first person Kinect Star Wars: Rome Edition. That's more or less a rough summary of what I thought I was getting with this game prior to E3.

I seem to instead be getting third person Spartacus, with a tiny dash of God of war, and with a combat system similar to the Batman Arkham games, and now they're working directly with Andy Serkis' motion capture studio, Imaginarium, for all the game's most important performance capture? Basically, it's looking a whole lot less like the far less ambitious, and more cheesy looking, Kinect game that I was expecting. This is looking more and more like a title that may end up being a tad bit more than meets the eye on a variety of levels. This doesn't mean it will be some incredible game. Far from it, but it's a pleasant surprise for someone who had the lowest possible of expectations for a crytek game based on sword based combat in rome. I sure as heck didn't anticipate there being scenes that look anywhere as awesome as that cutscene does in this game. Long story short, the graphics are a bonus, but this game is more ambitious than I originally thought.

That's your opinion. I like what I see, which is why I'm picking it up. I don't exactly expect anyone to feel bad for me if I don't end up enjoying the game as much as I thought I would, but I'm feeling pretty good about it. :)

There's already videos showcasing that there's more to the combat than the original gameplay demonstration suggests.

http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/3ozbqd/ryse--son-of-rome-e3-2013--in-depth-with-combat--cam-

From 4:20 on it's especially clear that there's more going on. And this is all still pre-alpha footage with enemy hit points lowered, making the execution prompts show up even sooner than normal. That's basically batman, but in a roman setting with a sword and a shield. Over 100 executions are confirmed. Button prompts can be disabled only partially confirmed, but definitely implied. Depending on how good you are at the game, the combat flows quite well, and there's video evidence to support this. There's strong indications of a fairly cool Gladiator based MP component in a dynamically changing coliseum. Basically, this type of beat em up, hack and slash style game is nothing new for people that enjoy the batman games, and are good at the counter mechanic at the heart of the combat system in those game. Only in batman, you don't choose when finishers happen, you also don't get to have any kind of input while a finisher is taking place. Essentially, you have more control over the flow of the combat in Ryse, and can dictate when you go for the big finish on your own terms. I like that idea in theory. We'll see what they do with it in the finished game. I like the setting. I think the main character looks pretty badass, and it's like I'm playing Spartacus. Where exactly is the crime in liking this game? I didn't like the previous kinds of games that Crytek made. This one seems far more interesting and more something that I would enjoy.
