Don Mattrick, president of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, told me that the decision to require internet for the Xbox One was driven by a desire to create a console unleashed from the technical limitations of today's not-entirely-connected society. Microsoft had a decision to make, he said; either create a console planted in the present or look to the future and create a device built on the concept that one day the internet will be as available as electricity or telephone service.

"Gamers want the best experiences possible — and they want a future-proof system," he told Polygon.

"Now, with Xbox One, we're stretching the canvas again so creators can design for the cloud with every game they make," he said. "In the next decade, every great game will tap the power of the cloud to deliver richer, more immersive worlds. We have a great offline game system in Xbox 360 that gets better when it's connected. We could have made another offline console, but then offline would have been the lowest common denominator design point for developers. We chose to take the progressive path."
Seems the required internet connection isn't going anywhere.

The Specs leaks as well as the rumors about 720 or XO were right after all. I think they themselves haven't decided all their policies yet.

One thing I hate about Microsoft is how they force consumers. Gold subscription to play games online and now Kinect2 is mandatory.

I wold say that the internet is already as available as electricity (at least in most countries), that doesn't mean we should be tethered to it all the time.

What i don't get about the whole kinect being mandatory thing, is that they've said they're going to give the user options in terms of privacy to a point where the cemra and mic arn't even on. In which case, why does it even need to be plugged in? It's such a weird thing to enforce. "You WILL plug in out new camera, even if you turn it off in the settings"

The fuck? It's your fucking decision. If you don't like it, don't buy it, it's as simple as that. Sony is more than happy to sell you a product that does away with all that crap you don't like about MS. And if consumers in general really don't like what MS is doing the market will weed them out, that's what the market does. What the backlash after the reveal and the subsequent backpedaling has shown is that MS is worried some of their decisions might fire back at them, just like Win 8 UI debacle and the surface flop.

Now, I don't want to pretend I had much interest in the consoles prior to the announcements since I'll be building a new PC this summer. But the PS4 reveal genuinely surprised me. The shift to a console that is ready to be integrated into a community framework out of the box is very compelling. I can see why they made that decision considering YouTube and Twitch played a major role this generation. Whenever it pays off is left to be seen, especially considering we don't know what the costs will be, but I think it's much wiser than clutching straws of a dying TV consumer base (in 2012 cable subscriptions were in decline for the first time in cable history).

I think MS will ultimately pay the price. They are trying to compete for a market that is in a secular decline, still thinking their biggest competitor is Apple when Apple itself has already been dethroned by Samsung and Google and faces accelerated margin compression. Tablets are taking over the living room, not Apple TV. As the integration of functionality continues they'll make a lot of devices obsolete, especially a glorified set top box that is meant to be around for 5-6 years.

Hope we get to see atleast half of this stuff at E3. Anyone know anything about this "Microsoft Studios - Osaka, dedicated to providing exclusive games and content for Japan"?, never heard of them till now, is it just little live arcade type games or AAA games they will be producing?.
Pushed to discuss Microsoft's attitude to first-party exclusives during a roundtable conversation with journalists, he offers a regrettably detail-free yet promising account of Xbox One's core release slate. "I think they're always important. We just ran through our script and counted the number of exclusives, and looked at the amount of money that we're spending and the deals that we have, exclusive windows and [things to create differentiation]. I think, candidly, people are way, way under-indexing how hard we're punching."

"We're going to come out with detail on things and people are going to go, 'oh my god'. Like, 'they were focused, they made this a core goal, core activity'. There are great hits, there's innovation, and there are world class creators plugged in. You know, I keep track of it all, and I hope everyone here does - we kind of look back at all the different years and at what we shipped, how many units have sold. There's a lot of hyperbole about things, but I think we're going to deliver."
Thankfully, a glance at the bigger picture reveals that this is more a question of presentation than strategy. Microsoft will invest no less than $1 billion into games next gen - an unprecedented sum for the firm - and Xbox One will swipe 15 exclusive titles in its first year at retail, including eight new IPs. All that's on top of a two-year period of bulking up, which has seen Microsoft Studios open new games studios in London, Washington and Victoria, British Columbia while snapping up talent for its existing operations.

Core gaming powerhouses 343 Studios, Lionhead and Turn 10 have all seen significant appointments - Lionhead, for instance, now runs under the supervision of MMO expert John Needham, in further evidence that the rumoured Fable 4 will be a cloud-centric affair. Microsoft has hired former Sony executive Phil Harrison - the man who oversaw the gestation of such noted PlayStation IPs as LittleBigPlanet - to manage internal projects and developer relations in Europe. Rare Ltd is poised to return to one of its cherished franchises in what Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer bills a "historic" revival.

Black Tusk Studios is working on a mysterious action title that's designed to compete with Halo and Gears of War. Microsoft has opened Lift London to create and incubate smaller scale cloud-based games. New projects are underway at Microsoft Studios Osaka, reflecting IEB president Don Mattrick's assertion that the company remains "committed" to Japan. Perhaps most hearteningly, Microsoft has acquired Press Play and Twisted Pixel to work on "weird, unique" titles for Xbox Live. In short, there's a lot more bubbling away under the surface than the Xbox One event suggests.

I am getting pretty pumped to see what games theyre gonna show, they are pimping themselves up pretty high so they must have a few aces up their sleeves. Lets be honest, all they have to do is tease a new Halo and Gears of War and the hardcore crowd will probably be satisfied, but what do you guys expect/want to be announced?

Gears of war Judgement didnt get much praise compared to 3 and I can see why, I played it and I got bored but pushed through it to finish it.
Its a boring series now and not much they can do with itunless they overhaul it for the sequal But then again, the story ended well on 3 so there isnt anything else to go on by.
A new Halo, meh, what else is new, they will just rip off Halo 4 and call it a 5 instead and tweak it abit. Just like Halo Reach to Halo 4 lol

MS cant rely on Halo's and Gears games anymore in next gen, its being played out. Sure hardcore fans will get them to complete their collection or whatever but dont count on anyone outside that group will care unless they change tons of things in gameplay department.
Atleast thats my take on it.

E3 will be very interesting interms of games since we will see new IPs according to their reveals and the natural E3 event itself.

Are you insane lol, sequels are the bread and butter for publishers, all you have to do is look at the games that sell the most, then see them being churned out by Sony/MS and every other big dev out there, of course there will be new IP's but your an idiot if you think your not going to see more KILLZONES/BF/UNCHARTEDS/COD/GOW/GEARS/FORZA/GRAN T/GTA/HALO/AC ECT ect ect .....

That would be pretty hilarious given the fact MS is typically mocked for only having the same 3 franchises year in year out. They already have announced a forza, a gears and halo would just complete the trio. MS more then anyone needs to show a ton of new IP's. they've sat on those 3 for far too long.

Im not saying dont do it, by all means go for it, but dont do copy and paste like how Halo4 didnt bring anything to Halo interms of gameplay or Gears Judgement was exactly like Gears 3 but boring characters (other than Baird). For next gen sequals, they should exagerate their gameplay features yet keep the core stuff attached.
I love Halo and Gears but the last games of each franchised bored me, one i couldnt even finish of how boring it was (Halo 4).

But still, they should focus to make the same quality IPs like Halo and Gears for more AAA IPs exclusive to Xbox so its worth getting for.

Are you ok?, there was tons different about Halo 3 and Halo 4, why do you think Grift hated it so much lol, and the gears prequel was just that a prequel made by another studio, bit like the God Of War prequel. Dont get me wrong i'm all for New IP's and want to see plenty from both camps and all the devs, but dont think for a min we are not getting sequels to 8million plus franchises.

Oh, they'll keep making them, they're popular i wouldn't want them not to. They just need to add plenty more in addition. Just cycling through gears halo and forza gets a bit tiresome. It'd be the same with sony if they only ever made god of war, uncharted and GT.

you know what pisses me off people calling me a sony fanboy tbis time jinx.

i was loyal to nintendo because they did the right things to appeal to me, they then stopped.
i was then loyal to playstation 1
then sega ripped me away with the dreamcast and blew my mind

i then moved back to nintendo when the dc died :( they kept me intrested for about a year
then i bought a xbox, and just like the dc it blew me away and i stayed loyal to them until about my 4th rrod and they blamed me for not looking after it this was about 6 months before they admited to the worls there machine was dodgy.
this broke my faith and trust in this company, yes i have popped back to them time and time again like a abusive ex promising they have changed
and each time a new problem has stepped up, the last one been destroying halo mp, to others that might not be a huge thing but to me it was that final "look we just do not care what you want"

and this entire gen with each fall out with the ex my friend has comforted me showing me there is other fish in the sea and that they want me (this friend been the ps3 if you did not get my terrible metaphor?)
if its possible to view all my crazy ass mentally insane posts you will see how i have gone back and forth over the years.
fucks sake i came here as a xbox fan wanking over the halo 2 reveal.

i used the word loyal yes but im not a fanboy im loyal to the company keeping me happy, do not think for one second i will take it up the arse if sony get there drm out.
i will jump onto pc, minus the windows 8.

I played Halo 3 only once and it was years ago when it came out so i dont remember much.
But I played Halo Reach roughly before Halo 4 came out, but Halo 4 (i think only of latest since its not Bungie making Halo anymore) and I didnt find anything special about Halo 4 at all other than its usual great atmosphere and art.

But I can agree with you about prequals kinda suck compared to actual sequals by numbers, that I understand.
However I still stand by Halo 5 and Gears of War 4 (if there is anything left to do with that game) gotta do alot of good stuff for me to be personally interested.
I guess all we got to do is wait and see how it turns out when they show up, but i dont think of those franchises until that day shows up.
I think more of new IPs and i hope MS pulls it off at E3, if not, then I wont bother with them and go with PS4 since Sony has better exclusive I can get behind.

Well it all boils down to taste as many of the games you love (hack n slash) others find boring, so thats just down to personal pref, but with millions lapping up those franchises there not going anywhere soon.
