They know how important first party is and totally care. They're just not good at it.

E3 2014 though.. that was full of promise.

Its really stunning to see it all laid out on paper. They really do not care about 1st party at ALL.

In an interview Yibarra said they mainly wanted to show games releasing from this to next E3... they should have said that. I am sure they have bigger things cooking, but weren't able to show it off yet or else anyone would have complained that these games are years off. They learned their lesson, people just don't (want to) get it... bashing MS is much more hip these days :)

I do it with 'em all: PC, WiiU, PS4 and Xbox One.

There's always always next year. Next year there will be next year.

I imagine next year we'll see Halo 6, which shouldn't let the faithful down.

Still wonder what that "little" Halo surprise is... it also didn't show up in the "enhanced for XBOX" list... I thought that was gonna be it

I'm surprised they kept anything under wraps considering how little they showed. Crackdown looks terrible.

They learned their lesson though. I'm curious.. which lesson did MS learn?

Crackdown looks terrible I agree, it's even more unsettling when you consider it's going to release this year. And as for the lesson, you really want to discuss that, I mean...you?

When you look at XBO's initial showing on E3 you heard a lot about TV, always online, Kinect and wanted to punch Don Mattrick into the face. Since then they began focusing more on what the fans want. Dropped forced Kinect, added fan requested features on the OS, dropped always online, brought cross play and play anywhere, brought back-compatibility, resurrected fan requested franchises (Killer Instinct, Gears, Halo Wars, Phantom Dust), brought Gamepass (and EA Access earlier) and are working on more diverse exclusives for the system. Scorpio will enhance your old games as well, downample to 1080 or bring you real 4K and HDR and is compatible with all Xbox One acessories.

If that isn't learning your lesson, then I don't know :)

This E3 they only had few 1st party AAA games, but Xbox One X (god I hate that name) had a very good showing.

This reads as a contradictory statement.

You said it yourself: they needed to show that X1X is the best place to play multiplatform games and exclusives. I don't think they achieved that at all. What fans wanted was more exclusive titles. Not exclusive launch titles or whatever that even means. I guess not announcing games "too early" is a lesson learned, but it doesn't turn not having anything compelling to show into a win. Consumers didn't demand a specsheet war.

The only people sold on Scorpio are people who were sold on Scorpio before E3.
(Killer Instinct, Gears, Halo Wars, Phantom Dust)
"more of the same - finally on Xbox"!

Scorpio had a very good showing, amazing hardware for a very good price and will bring you the best versions of mulltiplats on console, too bad they couldn't show it better, because of marketing deals (CoD, NFS, FIFA etc. AND Destiny 2). But it IS there.

Personally I was expecting more new AAA IP. That I didn't see. Forza is amazing as usual and sure Metro Exodus is great but multi, Anthem seems to be what Destiny promised to be, but also multi. Ori and Minecraft in 4K didn't do it for me personally. So in terms of current games I think they could have done a lot better.

What I really liked was the mostly absence of aliasing when they showed X games. I will be able to live with that.

And as for Destiny and more of the same. If I recall correctly, your presence in the Destiny thread here on Gamersyde was mostly mocking. What has changed? But you don't need to... we all know what has changed ;)

You are incorrect. Always wanted a PC version. Always been a bungie fan. You might be confusing it with Halo 4.

Go ahead and try to dig up some embarrassing quotes. And Scorpio will not be the best place to play any exclusive or multiplatform title, considering they'll all be on PC too. Including releases from Microsoft Game Studios. Which I still can't be bothered to care about. Even though they're on PC too.

The games aren't there.

Then why didn't you play Destiny, just because it wasn't on PC or what? Don't you have a PS4 or XBO, you coud've played it there. Even on 360 and PS3...

So they avoided all the "this game isn't coming out soon" bashing, by taking on the "there aren't any video games here" bashing. Solid trade? Its better to have something to look forward to, then to have nothing at all. They should have at least teased Halo 6, Gears 5, whatever else they have cooking. Having no exclusive games to show, particularly on the eve of the launch of your new console, is a bad look.

I really don't know what they're doing with 1st party, but the situation continues to get worse year after year. I'm starting to think that they simply don't think 1st party games are important.

Correct. I did not play it because I wanted to play it with good controls, and was playing other FPS games at the time that were already there. And I wasn't really into the idea of playing it on 360 since most people were playing it on PS4 anyway. I'm a little skeptical of a few things with Destiny 2, but I'm still likely on board. Their server model is questionable though and consumers are demanding more technically sound shooters (60 FPS, servers) in 2017.

I won't play FPS on console unless I "have" to, as I did with Halo.

And none exclusive, and nothing to look forward to in late 2018 and beyond. It was a really weak showing, they need to show *new* stuff to get people excited about Xbox again. I think you do that through 1st party titles, and they just don't have any of those. The whole situation is weird.

A year from now they'll have a new Halo, a new Gears, a new Forza to show off. As predictable as these sequels they churn out are, it will at least give Xbox fans something to get hyped about.

They're really banking on the specsheet winning people over. That's not going to work on the average consumer.

It will give the console warriors what they need to keep going though, which is a small PR win for Microsoft, but ya the average consumer is going to have almost zero reason to buy the X. The Xbox One S and the PS4 base model are $500 combined and play the same games...

My thoughts on the Microsoft 1st party situation is basically this: if you're only going to churn out Halo, Gears, Forza every year, then how exactly do you expect to build your playerbase, and get people talking about Xbox again? These games like Halo/Gears aren't getting more popular, they're selling less with each successive release. Why aren't you letting your 1st parties try new things? They'll stay in this rut until Phil green lights some new IP from his 1st party devs.

You know how hype it would be watching the Microsoft conference, seeing the 343 Industries logo, and a brand new fucking game that has nothing to do with Halo shows up and blows us all away? Pretty fucking cool. You know what's going to happen when we see Halo 6 next year? "Oh, they're making a new Halo, that looks alright."

This is where I have to ask, what devs? Microsoft's first party strategy for years has been not to have one. They rely on second party partners to create new IP, and cultivate no culture of development in their own studios. They barely have studios worth discussing. Most of them are start-ups with little experience as a unit. They created start-ups to work on brands. That's been their focus since they let Bungie go: brands, not developers.

That's not where great games come from.

So, like, where would you say your interest regarding Xbox One X is now? It was negative not too long ago. Is it like, 2x negative now?

They've got 343 Industries, the Coalition, Rare, and the Forza dudes... maybe take a break from Halo and Gears for a hot minute and make a new video game?

I'd say my interest in Scorpio is more neutral now. I've been critical of Microsoft Game Studios for years, but that's because they've earned said criticism. I can't believe that anyone is satisfied by what they've shown so far that wasn't satisfied before seeing anything at all.

Rare is. Doesn't look great. Turn10 is a great developer but they're great at a specific thing. The Coalition and 343 are the exact sort of start-ups that I was referring to in that post. That's not a very strong roster.

They definitely need more. These are all proven franchises and sure will attract fans, but they need new exciting stuff as well. Wonder why they didn't talk about that Studio Ghibli "Fable Online" game, that was beeing talked about on NeoGAF.
