Well then, I stand corrected and apologize for the confusion. But my larger point was that I think you are too excited about the PS4 to ever seriously not end up pulling the trigger on a purchase, even if certain things were not entirely to your satisfaction, because you've enjoyed your experience way too much on the PS3 and there are franchises and developers whose next installments or games would be too tempting for you, as would be the same for me with the next Xbox. Now, I plan on getting both and am pretty much already decided on getting both, barring some terrible and unfortunate news for one of the two machines, which I don't think exists at a serious enough level for either new machine, yet.

No used games would be an annoyance, a fairly important one because I couldn't lend games out anymore, nor borrow, as little as I do so, but it would never get me to not buy either of the two consoles. Essentially, it would never outweigh my desire to play the next set of Halo games for the next xbox. The same goes for an online requirement, as in it wouldn't make me not purchase a console, but it also legitimately doesn't bother me the way no used games would. My biggest gripe by far with the next xbox is an issue that exists on the current xbox 360. You have to pay for xbox live gold to use the youtube app, internet explorer, netflix, the fios tv app etc? I think paying for online play is as stupid as the next guy hence why I'm not a Gold subscriber, but I don't see it as quite as stupid as forcing people to pay to use those things that should be free, and are already free on Windows 8. I think you also pay to use facebook and twitter? That's fucking insane. The only reason why the next xbox isn't a no buy solely based on these things, is because I wouldn't be buying the console to use those things which I can already do far more effectively on my computer.

However, it pisses me off because, for a so called serious attempt to take over the living room and households, they sure have a very stupid way of trying to do that. And while I don't consider it a MUST have on a next gen console that all these things be easily accessible without me having to pay for it, I would still greatly desire for them to be so, if I did decide I wanted to take advantage of them. Some of these services exist on my HDTV more or less, I can utilize them if I want, but I don't absolutely require that they be there. I just like knowing that they are there and available if I decide to use them, and that's what I felt things were like the entire time on the 360, until pretty recently, like this year recent. So that is by far the biggest reason, to me, to not get the next xbox. I don't see online required and this other stuff as being that big a deal. Maybe I may come to see it as terrible if they have a terrible sim sity style situation, but I have doubts Microsoft will allow that to occur.

Ultimately, my biggest counter argument to this stuff is, it isn't something that affects me all that much. It doesn't have me look at it and think, "Holy shit, this is going to be a serious problem for me. No way can I consider getting this thing, because it just isn't for me."

I don't get that sense from no used games and a requirement to be online, because I have devices that I use right now that I could never imagine using without being connected to the internet, and would only ever do so in extreme, but very rare, cases. If it bothers people so much, then I think those people shouldn't buy it and stand on principle if that's what they truly believe.

Microsoft Studios Creative Director makes a fool out of himself and, I think, makes the company look bad in the process. His reaction likely confirms always online. He probably also got himself fired in the process, possibly. I have no issue defending it, but to do it the way he did while representing the company, isn't very flattering to Microsoft.

Oh okay, thank god. No, I don't agree with his stupid analogies. I agree that they are also stupid, and that he was very insulting of a lot of people. That said, I don't see always online as a big deal and believe that most people have a very reliable internet connection. If an internet connection is an issue for you, then you don't go out and purchase a device that requires an internet connection. Simple enough.

However, unlike that clown, I don't work for Microsoft, so I don't have to be as considerate of people that may be negatively impacted by their products. I won't deny myself the basic satisfaction of a new game console and the games and services that come with it simply because some people out in the middle of nowhere have trouble accessing the internet. Oh, he's done, no doubt about it. There are usually clauses in contracts for companies like this which include twitter, as far as misrepresenting or embarrassing the company is concerned. There's no way in hell that his disrespectful attitude is what Microsoft believes, and it's silly to assume that. However, that said, in just one day this guy has become the voice for everything Microsoft wants to do next gen, because technically nobody else in Microsoft has seemingly come as close to talking about their next gen console, except this guy. Even if the game division guys want to keep him, he'd be lucky if all he gets is a slap on the wrist. I see on GAF that they're saying the guy at Crytek that accidentally talked about the next Xbox was fired. I don't know if his being fired is in anyway connected to what he did by accident, but if he got fired for that, what might happen to this guy who did far worse? And I think people on GAF are generally just jerks, because I remember seeing on twitter someone pointing out how specific idiots kept throwing in the faces of people at EA and Crytek about how this guy in Crytek already talked about the next gen xbox and is still talking in private to sites, so they might as well talk about it, too, or some crap like that. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that got this guy fired, and it's pretty fucked up if you ask me, but then what do I know, maybe they have proof that he was leaking, or maybe his firing is completely unrelated to any of this.

I don't see this as a restriction of capabilities in the slightest bit. I honestly don't. They are simply recognizing the reality that's staring everybody in the face each and every day of our lives. If you aren't on the internet, or don't have a reliable internet connection, then you are simply behind the times and there's a lot of people who won't sit around concerning themselves with why someone in this or that part of the country, or world, doesn't have internet access. Most people who are consumers of these kinds of devices have access to the internet, even if they don't choose to take them online. I know people who have very good online connections that don't/didn't take their 360 or PS3 online only because they don't have to, but when I point out to them all the updates that they are likely missing, they usually go ahead and set it up right then and there, or ask me to help them if they don't understand the process. In a lot of cases, people just needed a long enough Ethernet cable. In every case, they all said they would have done it sooner if it was somehow required of them. There's a lot of other people that are exactly like this.

What I was getting at with the "closer to 360" comment was that when it's doing all the DVR stuff etc you're eating 2 cores and 3gb RAM, you're eating 20-30% of the maximum performance of the console for fuck all to do with games of a console that is already 30-40% worse on paper. A bit of an exagerration sure, but it's a lot of power to lose for what my set top box does anyway. Maybe grasping at straws at this stage, complete denial or something but I just couldnt believe MS was as fucking dumb to attempt to release a machine with such a gulf in class between its major competitor.

Perhaps the online stuff is the key, perhaps they are that stupid. Perhaps they are that arrogant. Perhaps they have the anti cerny to lead the project, perhaps the sony old guard have been snapped up to lead MS into the next gen.

The bigger issue involving Adam Orth isn't that he's defending always online, it's the unprofessional and even disrespectful way that he went about doing so. When major sites can lead and end with comments that are clearly unprofessional, even specifically pointing out how disrespectful he was in specific instances, then you know this is about far more than "always online." Always online is the side show. The unfortunate star is Adam Orth, who may very well be out of a job soon the way this is spreading. You can't get fired for simply defending always online. You can very well get fired for the embarrassing way he went about doing so.

Its actually both, the guy is a dick and he is praising a shitty "feature" in the worst way he can. The GAF thread is brilliant, they have an ability to push something in all the right direction at times and this is one of them.

What people care about the guy is that he is in a senior position within MS and his attitude in general aligns with the way MS seems to be handling the next generation and the kind of attitude that sony entered this generation with. Sure in the grand scheme of things he is irrelevant, but it's interresting to see someone within MS meet up with the general feeling you get from the rumours of their console.
