A few good games? Sure. Ideas? Not so much. The X1 should have been online only and disc-less. That would be a little more genuine. That's where they're headed, after all. This stopgap solution where they try to preserve the current market while shaping into a future market, is resulting in just as much negative press anyway. They could have gone all in. I think it would have been more approachable.
Next time, I'm sure, Gamestop won't be so lucky.

You could be right that Sony changed their plans last minute when they saw the backlash that MS got, but that's besides the point, they changed it, MS have still yet to entertain the notion.
Also Sony and other companies like EA, Ubisoft and Activation have probably had a wake up call on what they can and can't get away.
I think by next gen (2020 or whatever) very little software will be on physical media so you are probably right that somewhere in the middle of this generation there will be a change over, but you don't just smack people in the face with a sudden change you do it over time, otherwise you are going to get backlash.

NEVER forget the shareholders. "Geteiltes Leid ist halbes Leid" we say over here which translates roughly into: pain is reduced when shared.
And to come back to the artist thing: if the artists get more money for their creation by the same amount of people playing it, this can only be a good thing.
I wonder how much web-traffic XO will produce every 24hours?

Inscrit depuis 7555 JoursMarcin Iwinski of Polish studio CD Projekt Red says the omission of Poland from the list of countries supported by the Xbox One at launch is "a sad situation."
You will no doubt recall yesterday's news that the Xbox One will only have Live support in 21 countries at launch, meaning that Microsoft's forthcoming console, thanks to its reliance on a daily connection to the internet, won't work anywhere else. We noted in our report that among the countries not on the list was Poland, a noteworthy fact because Poland is the home of CD Projekt, the creator of the vaunted Witcher RPG series - the final chapter of which made a pretty big splash at E3.
As it turns out, nobody at CD Projekt had any idea that this was going to happen. "I was just in a restaurant and saw the list," Iwinski told Game Informer. "I was surprised, and I really hope that it isn't final. I think Polish gamers will speak out loud. From my perspective, it's a sad situation."
Microsoft keep digging the hole you might reach the other side of earth.

Off topic response to some of negativity. Remember when paying for online play was a no no...? See how quickly (and silently) that was accepted? According to Edge, Sony's E3 stuff on DRM was a PR play and development sources fully expect broadly similar DRM policies across both systems. http://www.edge-online.com/news/e3-2013-drm-free-p...
So would it be especially disingenuous if that were to be the case on PS4 in the end after all they did to benefit from online outrage over DRM? Prediction: People will accept DRM on PS4 when it happens, and it will, just as people said pay to play online would happen eventually also. All that will be left is criticism of the Xbox One's policy of requiring an online check every 24 hours. Beyond that, people appear more excited to say how much they hate Xbox One than they apparently are to talk about a platform, PS4, that appears to address all of their concerns. This thread is more than twice the size of the PS4 thread, and just looking at gaf, it appears any Xbox One thread grows about five times faster than a thread on the PS4, thanks in large part due to the same people saying how much they hate Xbox One over and over. However, lost in all the negativity, I feel, is that once you get beyond all the outrage over DRM, there's a pretty strong degree of positivity about some of the games that have been announced for it so far. The negative stuff is just easy to find especially when you go looking for it, or people are eager to inject it into every other discussion relating to Xbox One. Apart of me gets the impression that it isn't all trolling, though, and people just genuinely want to see Microsoft change gears on some of their policy stuff, and Microsoft has clearly left the door open to precisely that happening depending on the realities of the situation they are dealing with. They even say as much on their policy page.
Until then, however, I'll just worry about the games.

You're going to lay down and accept whatever Microsoft does. Whenever. However. You don't seem to have limits. So long as they keep milking that Halo brand, you will be there. You are defending the system by saying that someone else will do something equally ridiculous in the future! What a great argument. What great rationalization skills. Like I said before, you could be a DIVX salesman if this were 1998. Ri-fucking-diculous.

It's true, I refuse to miss the next Halo game, but beyond Halo, I'm just naturally curious and interested to play just about any number of new games that catch my interest, even if they don't command the same loyalty from me as a Halo or something from Sakaguchi might. And to the Xbox One's credit, I think it deserves some credit for one of it's better, less talked about policies: I never liked the idea of paying to play online MP before. In fact, I loathed the idea. However, with what now seems a guarantee of dedicated servers for all games on XB1, a gold subscription is now finally something I can realistically justify. I'll actually be more willing to try things that I haven't wanted to dedicate time to in the past, such as Halo's MP, which will now be 60fps along with the campaign. I'm a huge fan of the NBA 2K and Fifa games, they are a huge part of why I always need to get the next more powerful console out there because I always need the newest and best versions of those games, and I'm extremely excited at the thought of playing any of those online against friends or family with dedicated server support. I didn't bother so much on my 360, because it was peer to peer, which destroys the gameplay strengths of either game. For multiplatform games that I have zero desire to go online with, I'll play on my PS4. However, for the ones that I really do want to take online and challenge people in, dedicated servers makes the XB1 the default choice. As far as I'm aware, PS4 will still be peer to peer on most games. Division, for example, one of the biggest surprises this E3, I will get for PS4. Why? It has dedicated servers that Ubisoft themselves are setting up for the game.
Dedicated servers are a big selling point for me this gen, and Microsoft are offering dedicated servers for every game released on XB1. Sure, it's no excuse for the other policies, but it's sure one of the nicer, more positive policies, which I think shows they haven't completely lost it.
Edit:: Publishers have no say on the XB1's family share feature, but they do apparently have a say on allowing you to lend your physical game discs to friends, the same say they will also have on the PS4. Just because Sony has been more skillful and adept at washing their hands of the controversy shouldn't mean that they are somehow excused from criticism, especially after their very bold remarks at E3. If at the end of the day publishers can still do on the PS4 what they can on the XB1, then Sony lied to a massive audience of people. Plain and simple. The irony of Sony making that instructional video on lending games to your friends is that it may only be possible for Sony's first party titles. Microsoft as a publisher is also having less restrictions on their first party titles, where you can give it away to a friend, resell or trade it in etc.
Lending and borrowing, of course, isn't supported on launch, but I don't see it as completely unbelievable when Microsoft implies or suggests they will build in support for those things at a later date. The skeptic may think, "Nope, they'll never do it. They're just saying they will," and they may be right, but we'll see.
