Microsoft revealed a new feature for DirectX 11.2 and Windows 8.1 today called “tiled resources” that enables a graphics card to display a huge amount of detail without overwhelming it with memory-intensive textures.

Tiled resources automatically swaps in the details whenever a gamer is looking closely at it. This should enable developers to pack in tons of lifelike textures. This functionality is only available on Windows 8.1 and next-gen consoles.

“The motivation for doing something like this is to enable you to make games with unprecedented amounts of detail,” Microsoft vice president of Windows Antoine Leblond said in a presentation at the company’s Build conference today in San Francisco.

Leblond demonstrated this technology using a map of Mars that was blurry whenever he zoomed into the landscape. He then turned on tiled resources, which made the minutiae of the surface of Mars pop with crispness.

In a different demo, Leblond zoomed in on a glider to show its rivets and dirt smudges.

This feature should improve visual performance on any PC running Windows 8.1, and it is something developers will have access to on Xbox One.
Very important to Xbox One development. API support for GCN's PRT feature for use with virtual texturing. Will be extremely useful with the ESRAM.

As I pointed out in the other thread:

This is already a feature of the AMD GCN architecture used in Xbone and PS4. AMD refers to it as Partially Resident Textures (PRT) and claims texture sizes up to 32TB. OpenGL already has support for this through an AMD extension.

So both Xbone and PS4 will have this feature
Sounds like this is an AMD feature

How am I supposed to drive while Im watching the light play across the different surfaces in the cock pit. There is a TON of detail there. Geez, the way the light and shadows work on the indicator panel is awesome. Not to mention the carbon-fiber. Just fix that glitchey white tree and adress the mirror pop-out. Beautiful...

Yeah, lots of graphical glitches but they'll probably get to them. Will probably be the best launch title really the way things are looking, for either console.

Should make for some great games once dev's really get a handle on it.

PRT has been a built in feature of AMD's GCN architecture since its introduction, so there's nothing new there. However, it doesn't appear as if it was ever properly supported or exposed in the Directx API. It's also pretty significant for the Xbox One because it's so very convenient considering the way the Xbox One is designed. This will be pretty nice for the 32MB of ESRAM inside the Xbox One. Up to 3GB of highly detailed texture data was loaded into just 16MB of GPU space at Microsoft's keynote.

well, the bottom one is getting there. the top one is more like what infamous is doing. realistic mo-capped movement, but a very unrealistic, stylised look for characters. i mean, there's no way you'd mistake it for reality.

Every gaming sight at the E3 demo thought it was a live action shot at first when they saw the female character in the QB demo at the start (me inc) just amazing, the Sorcerer tech demo looked great too.

really? the hair, weird shadowing, lifeless eyes, people fell for that? i was impresed by the facial mo-cap, much like i was with a lot of games at E3 (seems to be the new next gen advancement that is much needed in gaming). i don't see how anyone could think either where live action though, we're simply not there yet. although the QD tech demo lapses into it every now and then, but there are still a LOT of tell tale signs.

I was squinting my eyes when i first saw it a bit unsure, but after the scene kicked in you can def tell the game signs are there, the facial capture was the best i saw for sure, i find it funny that all the devs are getting much better with faces yet the hair always seems about a gen behind lol.

The hair tech is getting better but to mimic realistic hair is complex, even with the best CGI the hair always looks a little off, that said it is getting better. Remedy have really impressed me so far, as have DICE with the facial mo-cap.

assuming they'd use this sort of tech. i have a feeling those sort of games (elders scrolls/fallout etc) will still have pretty crappy, flapping jaw facial animations, but hopefully that ain't the case.

The first Mass Effect on it's time have some really great facial animation, so we can be sure a next gen Mass Effect will have it to. Now ES and Fallout, Bethesda is not know for making great facial animation, so we can assume that will be the case on them.

There using the Frostbite 3 engine for the next Mass Effect entry, so i expect the facial animation to be a big step up in quality (fingers crossed).
