They will? They've been yammering on about this sequel since 1996.
Exactly. Now they can shut the hell up!

Titanfall sounds cool. You can hate on Source all you want. Portal 2 proved it can still look good. I hope it won't require Windows Live for this Cloud nonsense though.

Portal 2 still suffers from a lot of Sources limitations too. I don't think it's going to be a big deal in a smaller, tighter MP setting anyhow though. That latter point does concern me. Could you imagine it being a Windows 8 exclusive.

What a disaster that would be.

I'm more worried about the AI elements than I am anything else. There's something unsettling to me about a multiplayer FPS with AI in it.

Portal 2 looked good, yes, on 7 year old hardware, but it didn't look great. Not even on PC. The idea of it being used for a next gen title just seems crazy, but I guess no more crazy then COD being built on an engine with quake 3 roots. They obviously like dated engines!

People so infrequently start these things from scratch. The Call of Duty example just shows you how far you can push legacy code. It's not like they're literally using the Quake 3 engine.

It doesn't seem to leave much room to evolve though. What they built from the foundations of quake was impressive, but it started showing it's age really quick. If source is their go to engine next gen, either they've tweaked the tits off it, or it's going to look dated before it's even released.

Yeah I'm not actually worried. I'm more lookin' forward to the 120 fps! :D

Like I said.. more questioning how it will all work and play than how it's going to look. I'm very intrigued though, for obvious reasons.

Maybe i'm just not understanding the coding or whatever, but i imagine that the general gruntwork of drawing polygons, playing sounds and polling player input hasn't changed much since quake 3, and i also imagine it's by far easier to add more advanced shaders and physics on top of that than it is to do it all from the ground up, for little discernible results?

Sure.. although much of the Quake physics model is intact in Call of Duty. Underneath additional stuff like Havok mind you. As is some netcode (at least in previous Call of Duty games.. they've been messing with that more and more).

Those were all good things though.

My problem with source engine is the environments look so lifeless and dull. I'm a pretty avid counterstrike player and i am SICK of it at this point.

Oh since I didn't see it posted here yet, the downclocking has been debunked for the BULLSHIT that it is.

If they didn't want to reinvent the wheel and develop a new engine, why not use the CryEngine, or Unreal Engine, which so far seem like they should hold up very well for next gen?

And what exactly makes you think that Cryengine 3 or Unreal 4 doesn't have roots in their old stuff? Do you think they sit down and go from scratch each time? Obviously i can't be certain but i'd say it's a pretty good bet that UE4 is pretty much UE3 updated for the next generation of shaders and hardware. In the same way, there is no goddamn way they'd have it look like Portal 2. Wait until you see it before you shit yourself over their engine choice. Feel free to go on a rabid rant if it actually looks like Hal-life 2 come monday though.

All sounds awful. But it sounds like there COULD be a nice exploit there like 'gamesharing' on PS3. Where you could give your account details to 10 of your friends and work mates...I mean, family, yeah...family. And they can all play it for free?

I'd like to call it common sense. What's the point of whining about engine choice when you haven't even seen the game?

Because if they stick with it all generation long we'll have a nice COD situation on our hands, where it'll look like a steaming pile of ass juice within about 6 months of the first one being released (assuming it gets sequels) starting off dated, even IF what they do with it initially is impressive, will just lead to even more dated as time goes on.

Not the original release, that's obvious and true for all games, I'm talking every sequel afterwards. The engine is inherently limited due to it already being an old codger. Start off old, you're just going to end up looking older and older no matter how many tweaks they do.

Seeing as how the core of UE hasn't been rewritten since 2002 UE4 must look like a complete turd to you. That samaritan demo? Yeah, looked so damn 2004. I mean, obviously you NEED to rewrite the entire engine every time for it to look anywhere near decent. Just common sense that.

Core code is different to just outright using an old engine.

The Samaritan demo wasn't running on UE2 now was it?

If this game was using a NEW source engine, in the same way UE4 is a NEW unreal engine, then I'd be more optimistic. It would have had a drastic re write to get with the times if that where the case. If this is portal 2/l4d/team fortress source, then no, sorry, it'll look like garbage within a year no matter how they've tweaked it.

No, the samaritan demo was running on some revision of UE3, which is the culmination of a ton of revisions and additions to UE2. What i don't see is why you believe that they'd launch a AAA title on the same engine that runs Half-life 2. It makes no sense, they will ahve pimped the shit out of it, and it will more than likely looks up to par. Few games this generation switch, however, will blow your mind imo. I don't know what you are expecting, but the leap just won't be that huge in terms of raw graphics. Higher res textures, a bit more polygons and perhaps some improved lighting, but it will all be rather subtle by comparison from last gen.

And again, we will likely get to see the game in a few days, so why not wait at least that long before condemning it on something so silly as not having a 2 at the end of the engine name?
