With our modern architecture, Xbox One games will load more quickly, will be always accessible from the cloud, and there is no physical limit to the size or scope of the content provided.

Here are our platform policies and capabilities for game licensing – all of which will be made available when Xbox One launches later this year:

•Buy the way you want—disc or digital—on the same day: You’ll be able to buy disc-based games at traditional retailers or online through Xbox Live, on day of release. Discs will continue to be a great way to install your games quickly.

•Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud. So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.

•Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.

•Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

•Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

•Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.

As we move into this new generation of games and entertainment, from time to time, Microsoft may change its policies, terms, products and services to reflect modifications and improvements to our services, feedback from customers and our business partners or changes in our business priorities and business models or for other reasons. We may also cease to offer certain services or products for similar reasons.

In the months ahead, we will continue to listen to your feedback as we meet with our partners in the ecosystem to bring additional detail about our policies.

We are excited about this new generation of games and entertainment and look forward to sharing more news with our fans.

Xbox One will deliver new benefits for gamers that are only possible with a system designed from the ground up to be ready and connected. Here are just a few examples:

•A new generation of games with power from the cloud: Because every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection, developers can create massive, persistent worlds that evolve even when you’re not playing.

•Your Xbox One is always ready: Xbox One is designed to run in a low-powered, connected state. This means your system, games and apps are always current and ready to play—no more waiting for updates.

•Stay connected to your friends: Never miss an opportunity to play games with your friends or to catch up with family on Skype. Use Skype in Snap mode to chat while you play games or watch TV. Or enjoy group video Skype calls with people around the world, all from the comfort of your living room.

•Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud. So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.

•Buy the way you want—disc or digital—on the same day: You’ll be able to buy disc-based games at traditional retailers or online through Xbox Live, on day of release.

Networking Technologies

A range of advanced technologies will make these scenarios possible, including:

•Superior wireless performance and coverage throughout the home: Xbox One is equipped with a gigabit Ethernet port and 802.11n wireless. With 802.11n, Xbox One can use the 5GHz wireless band which eliminates considerable interference from other devices in the home, such as cordless phones, Bluetooth devices and microwaves. Xbox One uses two wireless antennas, versus one in Xbox 360. This provides dramatically better coverage and sustained performance, which means faster internet speeds in more areas of your home.

•Faster connection to a world of smart devices: With Wi-Fi Direct, Xbox One can speak directly to smart wireless devices and connect to them through the cloud. This means your smartphone or tablet will interact with Xbox One seamlessly.

•Future proofed with power from the cloud: Microsoft has created a global network of more than 300,000 Xbox Live and Windows Azure servers, to help creators realize their visions of what is possible with a connected system.

Networking Requirements

To ensure Xbox One works optimally and can offer the experiences described above, it is designed with the following networking requirements:

•For an optimal experience, we recommend a broadband connection of 1.5Mbps. (For reference, the average global internet connection speed as measured recently by Akamai was 2.9 Mbps). In areas where an Ethernet connection is not available, you can connect using mobile broadband.

•While a persistent connection is not required, Xbox One is designed to verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend. Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

At Xbox, we’ve always believed in a connected world of games and entertainment. With Xbox One, we are planning for a connected future. We can’t wait to show you what’s to come.

You're really reading all of this as A GOOD THING? They just confirmed all of the shit we were yelling about since these rumors started.

If you think nothing will change from the fact that now companies have to "allow" us to play our games offline, trade them in, and give them to friends, I want to live on your planet.

And now that this has been confirmed for both consoles (except for always-online), forgive me for being skeptical on this generation.

No renting, no loaning. No private sales (unless selling to someone who has been on your friends list for 30 days)

Console Checks in Every 24 hours (every hour if signed in on another Xbox)

Trade-ins are up to the publisher and only at participating retailers

You can give a game to a friend only if they have been on your friends list for 30 days, and then they keep it forever.
And to do ALL of this without one benefit to the consumer is utterly baffling. This industry cannot be made up.

- I never cared about renting. They give you up to 10 family members to use your games from ANY Xbox One. ANYTIME ANYWHERE. This suits me just fine.

- One check every 24hrs. If your IP fails you can use your mobile as a backup. If you're one of those people who can't maintain a connection at least once day, then you should go with another platform.

- I only use one store for my trade ins. The thing with the publishers fell completely in line with my expectations. It's their prerogative , boycott the ones you want.

- You expect your games back? lol If I ever gave a game to my one of my friends or family members I've never asked for it back anyway and they won't be charged any fees for it.

Honestly Phaethon did you not even bother to read any of that or did you just gloss over it?

It sounds pretty shitty to me still.

And why does it say that there's no lending but there's also lending? It's a little convoluted.

It's good that they've cleared a lot of that stuff up, I think. It's still not a solution that appeals to me. Especially since there are so many variables that can be altered by third parties. I assume Sony's system will be similarly obtuse and silly. At least they've opted not to use it themselves. It's still a bit of a crock.

So much for simplicity.

Sony has something similar in place and we just don't have the details. They've only said they won't use it themselves. We can pretty much assume most other publishers will opt in.

That said, having the option is a nice gesture. Even if it's not practically different.

But did they say if you can buy used games and trade games in...all games with no twist as in fees or whatever? and I know no internet connection is needed nor some stupid device to be connected to to Ps4 to make it work.

Xbox has alot of stupid cons compared to PS4, atleast from what I have had time to catch on and read about. That and PS4 has actual games to boost the interest of buying that console than Xbox.

I hope Sony does clarify alot of their things at E3 on how they plan on doing with all this with PS4.

No, they haven't said that. They've actually sorta implied that they have a very similar system in place and that publishers can opt in/out of it.

I think the days of a console where you simply throw a disc in and boot it up are over.

Oh that sucks, I guess we need to wait for E3 for more details then.

Thing is I dont like to buy my games digitally since I cant trade them in if I think the game is bad :(
I guess I have to be more careful on the games I pick to waste money on, still sad.

But then again, like you said, its the publishers call, so hopefully not all of them are greedy :)

second hand gaming has just died, we are forced to trade in at whatever prices those participating retailers offer us...Goodbye to rentals, selling over Ebay, Amazon ...etc unless after selling a game, I have to add whoever bought the game from me to my friends list and he has to wait for 30 days to then play it...What a fucked up shit to wake up to this morning.

I think I am done with MS and the only way I get to play any of the exclusive games I want on their next gen console is to wait until the end of its life cycle and buy them all for cheap.

This will go down in the history books of how to cock up your success. I hope MS crashes and burns.

My BIGGEST worry now is that Sony will adopt the same approach and we are all fucked!

I'm pretty sure they will, but it sounds like they'll also give us some half-assed attempt at meeting the consumer in the middle. If it's opt-in, they at least did a little damage control. We can blame the publishers again.

I guess this is where we're headed. These things aren't really consoles as we knew them.

it's a sad day man, sad day :(

I am just reading this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielnyegriffiths/201...

They mention: "We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you"...could that mean it's also up to the publishers? does that mean we can end up with games with no digital DRM a la Sony?

Their policies are shit and i cannot believe people are reading them and going "this isn't that bad"

It's all being set up like it's a digital only machine, but it's being applied to physical media. That's the worst of both worlds. As a digital only system, i'd be less insulted by it. But for a system with discs i can't help but be pissed off. Digital only was innevitable, but this is NOT the stepping stone into that world.

I'm expecting all games next gen to retail for much MUCH less (£20 maximum) to counter this...if i don't see that they can shove it, £5 bargain bin gaming it is. Woohoo.

Huh? Of course they will, do you really think third parties will have a different policies for the PS4 just because it's Sony? That's some wishful thinking. Probably should go with the Wii-U if you have a big problem with these DRM policies.

While i'm not a fan of these rather complicated policies, I'd say these are some very good benefits:
- Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One.

- Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud. So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.
Still, I think that if you have the disc, you should be able to play it regardless. I have no idea why this wont be possible.

Hmmm. I wonder what this guy ^ is going to say when Sony ends up doing the same thing? Especially when we now all know it was EA, Ubisoft and Activision who was pushing for all of this.

Most of you disagreeing were willing to go along with all of this no matter what, and have defended it since well before Adam Orth. The rest of us are just not happy with where the industry is headed as a whole. Of the two major players the Xbox just has the worst restrictions.

I personally am hoping the PS4 will hold with what they've announced so far. No online checks, no restrictions on 1st party games, and hope they continue region free games. That can all change.

What we're looking at is a huge devaluing of purchased games. Gamers can typically get $15 more for their games on sites like eBay, and that's pretty much gone. And there's not even an incentive to buy a game from another gamer when you'll never be able to sell that game yourself. Remember, that you have to have been on that person's friends list for a month to transfer ownership without a publisher sanctioned retailer. So here's how it'd work now:

1. I sell a game to Fred.
2. Fred adds me to their friend list.
3. 30 days later I send Fred the game and authorize him as its owner. (BTW Have you ever waited a month to play a game you paid for?)
4. Fred decides he doesn't like the game, and is stuck with it since no one can sell a pre-owned game.

Why would Fred ever buy from me? I've effectively paid $60 for a game that I'm stuck with getting whatever value the publisher deems Gamestop can earn. If Activision believes I should only get $5 for COD Ghost I can only get $5.

No one can honestly tell me that they would choose these restrictions if they had a choice. "This is not SO bad" is just an excuse.
