I missed it. Damn.
But then somehow, for some reason, I still complete the cinematic ‘kill’.
What?
Maybe it’s a bug I think, but no. Next time I deliberately press the wrong button. The kill goes ahead, no consequences. Then I try hitting no buttons whatsoever. The kill goes ahead. I put the controller on the table in front of me, the kill goes ahead.
What is going on here?
I ask one of the Crytek people hovering at the booth – is this a bug? Why am I completing kills when I hit the wrong button prompt? Or, worse, no button at all. Turns out it was a deliberate design choice.
“We don’t want the player to feel frustrated,” I am told.
I know it was designed as a Kinect game, which mostly play themselves.. but come on.. Heck, difficulty is undoubtedly tuned for E3, but you're showing this to the gaming press. Some of them are gamers and they're going to pick up on how awful this stuff is. Ryse is destined for big things.

I hate QTEs with such a passion and its still there!
Devs are just stupid to know how to make these segments real time and not QTE, pathetic.
But then again, Crytek is known for shooters not this genre, and this was a Kinect game at start and shoehorned controller type much later on.
Inscrit depuis 5768 JoursThe explosive set-pieces shown so far — one on a bridge being struck by an ocean liner, the other in an office being struck by a downed drone — are spectacular and overwhelming, echoing films like Inception.
And yet, over the course of a 30-minute presentation with the game's creators, one seemingly inconsequential aspect seemed the most astonishing: the mouths. What happens between the chin and the nose of the virtual lead characters of Quantum Break borders on lifelike. The lips purse and curl against the teeth, the teeth clinch down and the jaw lunges forward.
"The first thing we do when we hire an actor," he says, "is we send them to the dentist to get dental molds." These are then digitized and implanted into the skulls of their digital representations.
This attention to detail is part of a system the company calls the "Northlight Engine."
The obsession with human minutiae borders on the unsettling, but the result — an emotive, lifelike virtual face — is a significant improvement, Lake says, "from the static, constipated face of [the original] Max Payne." Remedy Entertainment, Lake explains, needs the most realistic virtual characters possible, because they will be starring alongside their real-life counterparts.

Inscrit depuis 7473 JoursOn Ryse -- Because I'm actually interested in the game and intend on buying it for launch, I've probably done a bit more reading on the game than some others here have done. First -- I'm not expecting some mind-blowingly incredible game. I'm expecting an average game that doesn't get very strong reviews. For me, however, the game just scratches an itch to get something like a Spartacus game, and this comes about as close as I'll ever get.
Crytek has confirmed that those, in fact, aren't QTE in the traditional sense, but are actually more brutal finishers that you don't have to use at all, but can if you want a more cool looking finish of the people you're fighting. Also, Crytek also confirmed that for the E3 demo, they purposely made changes to the demo and the way the game works in order to speed up the combat and lead to much quicker kills/finishers of enemies. In the real game fights with individual enemies will be double the time showcased in the E3 demo, or simply more prolonged in general. In the actual release that people will get and sites will review, battles won't be quite as quick. It will take more punishment of enemies to even be presented with the finisher option. This was confirmed live on spike after the Microsoft press conference. Cevat Yerli Crytek Co founder said this immediately after the press conference. He even said this before a single bit of gameplay had been shown, so it's obviously it's something he wanted people to be aware of.
Also, which finishers or executions you do get depends on the timing and speed of your button presses, introducing a bit of skill where better players can have more control over what kinds of attacks or executions the main character uses by mastering well timed button presses. The repetitive animations and executions were strictly for demo purposes. No matter what you did, or your timing, you were only going to get those specific ones in that demo. So, again, laugh as much as you may want. I know the game isn't going to be some mind-blowingly incredible experience. I already anticipate that because it's Crytek, but I like that it kinda feels and looks like a Spartacus game. Hell, I even spotted dozens of historical inaccuracies in the game, proving that clearly the proper research wasn't done into the time period to make sure everything is authentic, but whatever. What they've said to explain those historical inaccuracies is that they just created their own universe entirely, but clearly they realize they have more than a few mistakes nonetheless. ;)
And Knack is def back on my radar. Had no idea the shadow of colossus people were involved in the game.

Inscrit depuis 7473 JoursI think anybody making assumptions about this game's combat should watch this video. The game is being demonstrated by the game's design director, and he shows quite clearly that these aren't QTE you're forced to use. They are a replacement or an extension of those moments in beat em up style games where your character does a fancy finisher, but the player isn't allowed any input whatsoever. It just happens. Take the batman games, for example, we all know that batman when fighting off enemies has all sorts of really cool or stylish ways to finish off enemies, but they just happen with no input at all from the player beyond the button mashing. Ryse works a similar way, except you have to trigger those fancy finishers yourself it appears, and once in those slowed down combat moments, you can have direct input.
The finishers will happen as expected once triggered whether the player wants to screw them up or not. However, if you actually take an active role and make the input suggestions that are on screen, you get a bigger experience award for doing so. If you simply trigger the finisher and let it do its thing with zero or incorrect button inputs, you get no reward or extra experience for it. So, not really QTE. Just mini-games where the player is offered a chance to provide input for extra experience during scripted finisher sequences.
Again, not expecting some super mindblowing game, but there's more to the combat than what some believe currently, and, as such, I see it being a nice little distraction and time waster at launch.
Interesting, I had no idea there were location dependent finishers. Skip to 3:33, and then you'll get a chance to see it. Not him kicking the guy off the wall, the one that follows behind it. The combat flows much better than the footage from the press conference implied, and Crytek suggests the combat is deeper. Enemies can dodge attacks also, so they aren't complete morons, although, I expect combat to still be easy. I just like the basics of what I see, and if the extra depth that they promise is actually there, then it's not a game I mind playing at launch. I understand that I'm not buying some GOTY candidate. I don't have a problem with that, and I won't exactly have a lack of good games at launch.
My launch game purchases.

Also, agree about removing the online requirement and using official discs instead. If you want to game offline, then you lose the ability to quick switch between games, because then you have to make sure you have the proper game disc in first, which is something I'm sure many would accept so long as they can play offline for as long as they desire without having to check in.

Inscrit depuis 7473 JoursI also believe a more powerful GPU might have been used to overcompensate and emulate the performance of all the fixed function hardware that's going to be on the final silicon of the console, but combined that stronger GPU with custom driver to disable a good deal of the performance of the chip. I believe, for example, the best possible reference part for GCN architecture when it was brand new and still unreleased, was a Radeon 7970, so it would make sense if some devs were developing with a 7970 using custom drivers at one point, although I'm not certain.
The best example of this would be some showfloor video that I saw on youtube the other day, where someone asked if this is a ps4 and xbox one title, why are you guys running it on a PC. The guy at the demo area said simply, and I'm paraphrasing, "The hardware running this stuff isn't as important, because the dev team has fully tested these exact same graphics settings and assets on xbox one and ps4 dev kits, but some of the kits the team gets are so new that they can also be unpredictable, because we literally just got some of this new stuff in prior to E3. It's safer to come to the show with pcs running Xbox One and PS4 target assets and graphics settings, rather than run a risk with a dev kit that may crash and be unusable for extended periods at a time." If the game crashes on the pc, they just simply restart the game on the pc after making sure all necessary processes are shut down.
http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/article1896.html
The kit is a Power Mac G5 dual 2Ghz with 512MB of RAM memory. The Power Mac has an ATI X800 gfxcard with a R420 chipset and the site claims the dev kit mentions "xBox 360" during boot-up, another confirmation for "Xbox 360" as retailname for the Xbox2/Xbox Next/Xenon
Below are pictures of an official xbox 360 dev kit.

The Xbox 360 has long been known to use a special version of the G5 processor, as has the fact that temporary Xbox development systems were modified Power Mac G5 units. The demonstration at E3, however, are the first time that Power Macs have been used to show Xbox 360 games to the public
